The California Pizza Kitchen in downtown Walnut Creek has reopened after a norovirus outbreak sickened customers, temporarily closing the popular restaurant.
The county health department shut down the eatery Thursday night when lab results revealed norovirus in several employees and customers.
The restaurant, at 1120 Broadway Plaza, reopened about 12:30 p.m. Saturday following a thorough cleaning and an inspection by the county health department, said Kate Fowlie, spokeswoman for Contra Costa Health Services.
County health workers on Saturday morning trained restaurant employees in safe food handling techniques.
Nearly 20 customers are believed to have fallen ill after dining at the restaurant June 7 when two large graduation parties were held there.
Another person became ill after eating there June 8.
Often referred to as the "stomach flu" or gastroenteritis, noroviruses cause vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping.
