Last call: Wipe Trojan before 'Internet doomsday'

1 hr.

In 10 days, there's a chance you will not be able to access the Internet on your personal computer. No email, no Facebook, no Google, no Twitter ? nothing.

This potentially dire situation is due to the nasty DNSChanger Trojan, and the fateful date of July 9, on which the FBI is set to take all computers still infected with the malware offline for good. The date is being dubbed "Internet doomsday" for those who don't take action.

Launched by Estonian cybercriminals, the DNSChanger malware infected Windows PCs, Macs and routers across the world and enabled the crooks to hijack victims' Web traffic and reroute it to rigged sites.?After the FBI, in "Operation Ghost Click," busted the criminals last November, the FBI set up surrogate servers to keep the computers infected with the Trojan temporarily online so users could clean them. But on July 9, those surrogate servers are coming down.

[Will the FBI Shut Down My Computer? Questions and Answers]

This is bad news for anyone whose computer is still harboring the malware. According to a new report from Internet Identity, that unfortunate group, which at the time of the FBI sting was made up of 4 million computers and routers worldwide, still includes 12 percent of the Fortune 500.

In his Krebs on Security blog, researcher Brian Krebs cites a statistic from the DNSChanger Working Group, which estimates that more than 300,000 computers are still infected with the malware.

"That number is likely conservative," Krebs said. "The DCWG measures infections by Internet protocol (IP) addresses, not unique systems. Because many systems that are on the same local network often share the same IP address, the actual number of DNSChanger-infected machines is probably quite a bit higher than 300,000.

In the past few weeks, both Google and Facebook have undertaken notification campaigns?efforts to warn those who may still be infected with the Trojan. But if you didn't receive a warning, it doesn't mean you're in the clear.

There are ways to eradicate the DNSChanger from your system before July 9. Here's how, in three easy steps.

First, you'll need to change some settings on your computer. Click?here?for instructions on how to do so. That will make sure you're still able to get on the Internet when July 9 rolls around.

Step two is to run strong anti-virus software?that will clean up your computer. You'll probably have to pay for the software. Here's a list of?recommended anti-virus software?products.

The third step is to check your system again; if you're still seeing the Google alert, check the?DNS Changer Check-Up.

If you know your car might explode and crumble into a burning mass of parts in less than two weeks unless you got it serviced, you'd probably get it serviced, right? Do the same with your computer.

80% Renewable Energy by 2050 is Possible, Just Using Today's Commercially-Available Technology

contri/CC BY-SA 2.0

While more research into improving renewable energy technology is certainly a good thing, a new report from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory shows that even if we just had today's cleantech for the next 40 years, we'd still be able to supply 80% of our electricity from low-carbon sources.

Climate Progress does a good job breaking down the report, outlining the different scenarios presented by NREL, so I'll refer you there for the majority of the details.

Under the 80% scenario, wind power is the single-largest energy source, roughly 35% of electricity, biomass is roughly 20%, solar power (PV and concentrating) is a bit over 10%, as is hydropower, nuclear power and coal hanging in there at just under 10%, with geothermal and natural gas in the low single digits.

The key take-away for me is the same point CP is highlighting:

We don't need some crazy cool new technology or some groundbreaking invention. We aren't waiting on the scientific community to make some breakthrough.

There's obviously a hefty transition to go through to replace our existing, polluting energy system into a clean one?we shouldn't underestimate that?but if there's one barrier that simply doesn't exist it's the technology to produce energy from renewable sources itself.

To poke at a turn of phrase that particular irks me: There's no game that needs to be changed?other than perhaps the political one that keeps us stuck in the same polluting rut that's killing us and the planet increasingly quickly.

A Battle for Trust After Afghan Troops Kill GIs

This year, 22 service members in the U.S.-led coalition have been killed by men in Afghan uniform, which the military calls "green on blue" attacks.

A burst of gunfire snapped First Sgt. Joseph Hissong awake. Then came another, and another, all with the familiar three-round bursts of a U.S. assault rifle -- and the unfamiliar sound of its rounds being fired in his direction.

The shooters were close. His first thought: "Are Taliban inside the wire?"

But it was not the Taliban. Over the next 52 minutes, as his company of paratroopers braved bullets and rocket-propelled grenades in the predawn darkness to retake one of their own guard towers in southern Afghanistan, they found themselves facing what has become a more pernicious threat: the Afghan soldiers who live and fight alongside the Americans.

The attack on Sergeant Hissong's company, on March 1 at Combat Outpost Sangesar, left two Americans dead along with two Afghan assailants. But it was not the first time that Afghan soldiers had attacked forces from the U.S.-led coalition, nor would it be the last of what the military calls "green on blue" attacks. Already this year, 22 coalition service members have been killed by men in Afghan uniform, compared with 35 for all of last year, according to coalition officials.

The attacks, and the personal animosity that officials believe has driven most of them, are threatening the joint-training model that is one of the remaining imperatives of the Western mission in Afghanistan. The future of that mission will be a main topic at a NATO summit meeting this weekend as U.S. and European leaders discuss whether to accelerate their drawdown.

With the coalition as a matter of policy offering only the barest of details about the attacks -- the episode at Sangesar, for instance, was disclosed in a 71-word coalition statement -- interviews conducted during a week at this outpost provided a rare and detailed account of the violence.

At the personal level, the Sangesar attack was a nightmarish betrayal for the units involved, and in the moments after the violence ended, their commanders were already struggling to figure out how the Afghan and U.S. troops who share the base could possibly cooperate again.

They knew how quickly the situation could spiral downward. Just days before, hundreds of U.S. advisers had been pulled from Afghan government offices in Kabul after two U.S. officers were killed by an Interior Ministry employee, worsening an already poisonous atmosphere during the rioting that broke out after U.S. military personnel burned Korans.

The Afghan and U.S. officers at Sangesar, in the opium poppy belt of southern Afghanistan, decided that pulling back from one another was not an option at the base. Instead, they immediately put their men to work together repairing damage from the attack. The Americans also quickly turned down an Afghan Army offer to swap out the Afghan unit based at Sangesar.

Sergeant Hissong's unit had assumed formal command of the outpost on the night of the attack. New to the area, the Americans reasoned they needed the local knowledge of the Afghan unit, which had been in place for some time. The base is in the Zhare district of Kandahar Province, the closest thing to home turf for the Taliban, a group founded at an Islamic seminary a few kilometers from the outpost.

U.S. and Afghan soldiers were back out on joint patrols within a week. Security measures imposed immediately after the attack -- like posting armed guards at the U.S. mess hall -- had fallen away by the end of the month.

In April, U.S. and Afghan soldiers paired up to successfully push the Taliban from a nearby village.

After watching Afghan soldiers kick down doors and clear mud- brick farm compounds, "it's hard not to like some of those guys," said First Lt. Nicholas Olivero, 24, of Fairfax, Virginia. "But I'd be lying if I said there was trust across the board."

Another U.S. soldier added: "I don't always need to have them walking in front of me now. I did for a while."

Yet Afghan soldiers still complain of being kept at a distance by the Americans, figuratively and literally. The Americans, for instance, have put up towering concrete barriers to separate their small, plywood command center from the outpost's Afghan encampment.

Also still in place is a rule imposed by the Afghan Army after the attack requiring most of its soldiers to lock up their weapons when on base. The Afghan commanding officer keeps the keys.

One U.S. soldier nonetheless advised a visitor to take an armed escort to the Afghan side of the base "just in case."

The effort at Sangesar to move past the attack, and the difficulties in doing so, exemplifies the broader struggle that U.S.- led forces face as they seek to accelerate the training of the Afghan Army and police forces to take over before NATO's combat mission ends in 2014.

Sangesar, like hundreds of other coalition outposts scattered across Afghanistan, is split between U.S. and Afghan forces and in a remote and often hostile area.

Its structures are made of little more than sandbags, heavy-duty tents, plywood huts and Hesco protective barriers, hulking bales of canvas wrapped in wire mesh and filled with dirt. The guard towers at Sangesar are essentially wooden frames filled out with sandbags and placed atop the base's exterior wall of double-stacked Hescos.

Specialist Payton Jones, 19, was alone in one of the guard towers around 3 a.m. on March 1 when two Afghans sneaked up. They killed him with a bullet to the head. Within minutes, Staff Sgt. Jordan Bear, 25, who was among the first soldiers on the scene, had been fatally wounded in a volley of fire from the tower. When Sergeant Hissong, a 35-year-old on his third tour in Afghanistan, arrived moments later, bullets were still smacking into the ground near where Sergeant Bear had fallen.

The two Afghans in the tower -- a soldier and a civilian teacher - - were in an easily defended position. The only approach was up a funnel-shaped stretch of open turf that gave them a clear field of fire to repulse any counterattack.

Along with assault rifles, the Afghans had a U.S. machine gun and their own rocket-propelled grenades. One RPG obliterated a sandbagged bunker between a pair of mortar pits at the center of the base, just moments after a U.S. officer had dashed out of it.

Despite the gun and RPG fire, Sergeant Hissong and another soldier managed to sneak closer to the tower along a row of protective barriers. But they could not take a clear shot at the tower's narrow entrance -- its only opening -- without dangerously exposing themselves.

They turned to their grenade launchers but were too close to the tower for the grenades to detonate once fired. Most landed with nothing more than a thud. The ones that did explode hit the tower's exterior, inflicting little damage.

Helicopter gunships were soon overhead but could not risk firing their missiles or explosive rounds -- the base's fuel tanks were right next to the tower.

The paratroopers on the ground tried approaching the tower in an armored vehicle. But it was disabled with an RPG before it could be positioned to fire its powerful gun.

That left Sergeant Hissong and his comrade. After firing 17 grenades, they were down to their last one. They tried to position themselves so they could get a clear shot into the tower -- and enough distance so it would detonate.

Instead, it bounced off a wall and exploded atop a thick fuel line, sparking a fire that quickly shot toward the main fuel supply: a rubber bladder as big as a swimming pool that was now separated from the flames by only a row of protective barriers.

Racing to disconnect the line from the main fuel supply, Sergeant Hissong did not realize that his unit had finally caught a break: Flames were also climbing the wooden stairs to the tower, filling it with smoke.

The Afghans in the tower pushed out an exterior window, jumped about two stories to the ground and ran. They did not cover much ground before being cut down by an Apache helicopter.

The fight was over. But as the Americans and Afghans at the base began to regroup, they soon learned a third conspirator, an Afghan sergeant, remained among their ranks.

At the outset of the attack, the Afghan sergeant had gone to the outpost's entrance and shot the two guards -- a fellow Afghan soldier and an American. Then he sneaked back to his bunk to wait out the fighting with the other Afghan soldiers. His undoing: He had not killed either man at the entrance. The American was hit in the chest plate of his body armor, knocked down and badly bruised, but nothing more. The Afghan guard was shot clean through the shoulder, a serious but not life-threatening wound, and he quickly identified the third conspirator. Afghan forces detained him immediately.

The coalition and the Afghan Army would now have a rare opportunity to interrogate an Afghan soldier who had turned on coalition forces; most are quickly killed in ensuing firefights. Why had three men attacked U.S. soldiers they barely knew? Was it a personal grudge against Americans? Or had they turned to the Taliban?

The detainee has since presumably been asked those questions. But in a reflection of the official reticence regarding green-on-blue attacks, his answers remain shrouded in secrecy. It is not even clear whose custody he is in.

Phil Campbell: Obama Wants My Donation: Tell Me What to Do

Barack Obama keeps calling to ask me for money, and I can't bring myself to pick up the phone. And the phone won't stop ringing.

You tell me: What should I do?

There's a strange irony to this. In Seattle, the other side of the country from where I sit, Hollywood director Stephen Gyllenhaal has been using the entertaining film he adapted from my book about grassroots politics -- called Grassroots, starring Jason Biggs -- to energize people about the issues of the day. After some screenings he's been introducing audiences to local candidates and urging them to get involved. When Grassroots first came to Seattle in June, I went for its film festival premiere. Once there, a number of people asked me for my thoughts on politics and the average citizen's role in it, and without really thinking about it I talked about how important it was for everyone to get involved.

Meanwhile, my damn phone keeps ringing, demanding my attention. If it weren't for caller ID I would have picked up by now and actually talked to Obama (I'm sure it's him making all the calls, right?). Talk about an awkward conversation.

It's a real dilemma. I've written about politics before, back when I was an alternative-weekly journalist. My first book was about politics and idealism, and the novel I just completed contains a political subplot. And I stay on top of the local issues of the day, of course, on this site and a dozen others.

But none of this means I'm a terribly political person. I tend to walk away from activists at parties, especially when they seem incapable of talking about anything other than their pet topic. I fill my spam folder with emails from the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and the Wisconsin Democratic Party -- I may have given money to these groups, but those were during spastic fits of pique. As soon as the latest crisis affecting that group left the news cycle, my fists closed tightly around my wallet.

Seriously, I only gave to Obama in 2008 because one of Jon Stewart's fake reporters said something so acerbically about Dubya's deceptions about Iraq and subsequent failure to get Osama bin Laden that I really had no choice but to pick up the phone and give to the Democrat in the race.

Not a lot is on the line here, folks, 50 or 75 bucks tops. That's about all I can afford. But I get the feeling that I'm like a lot of people out there this year, wavering about getting involved in any way at all, especially after the Citizens United ruling rendered small donations like mine as an atom in the ocean. Before, I'm pretty sure, at least I would have qualified as a drop of water.

And then there's Obama's record. Where to start? His civil liberties record is good only when compared to Dubya's, which isn't saying much. He got a health care bill passed, but by the time this gets posted that may be completely undone, and in any case he has failed so utterly in framing that debate that most Americans are opposed to it even as they support many of its details. The wealthy still have Bush's tax cuts and, moreover, I'm with Paul Krugman on how to fix this economy: Government needs to spend more so that people have jobs, and thus are spending money; if anything Obama has been gung-ho for austerity by cutting government spending.

And isn't there a little thing called global-warming going on? Shouldn't we be concerned about that? Why haven't we heard anything from our president about that?

So go ahead, take a minute and tell me what to do, and please be sure to vote on the other comments you see. The question before us is plain: Why should I pick up the phone and give Barack Obama money this year?

I'll post the most popular comment, no matter what it is, with a brief response, as well as my favorite comment on my website and in my next Huffington Post blog post. If the winners are in New York, or can get to New York in mid-July, I'll extend to them a personal invitation to come with me to the New York Grassroots theatrical release, where I've been told Jason Biggs and the director are sure to show up.

Talk to you next week.

DNP Chrome for iOS preview

Today's Google I/O keynote was, as expected, all about the Chrome. Easily one of the biggest among the company's laundry list of announcements surrounding the browser-turned-operating-system has to be its arrival on iOS, bringing the functionality that an ever-growing number of users have come to know and love to the iPhone and iPad. The list includes, perhaps most notably, its cross-device syncing, ensuring that you can pick up where you left off on the desktop version of the program, taking your pages and tabs with you on the go. So, is Google's fancy mobile browser enough to get us off mobile Safari altogether? Check out some impressions of the iPhone version of the app after the break.

Bullied Bus Monitor Might Donate Some Contributions to Charities ...

The elderly school-bus monitor whose verbal abuse at the hands of four teenagers prompted a donation campaign when a video of the incident went viral might use some of the money to help mentally-impaired children, reports the New York Daily News.

A campaign to finance a vacation for Karen Klein of Greece, N.Y., in the wake of the sustained bullying, which brought the 68-year-old grandmother to tears, had raised $618,000 on the Web site IndieGoGo as of Saturday.

Amanda Romig, Ms. Klein?s daughter, told the celebrity-news site RadarOnline that Ms. Klein is likely to retire and take several of her children and grandchildren to Disneyland with the money, but also plans on ?making a donation here and there.?

?My nephew has autism and my niece has Down syndrome, and with those types of disabilities the kids are going to get picked on too, so she wants to help both causes,? Ms. Romig said.

PFT: What's delay in appeal ruling, Vilma asks

Jeff Pash, Greg AielloAP

As Commissioner Roger Goodell continues to deliberate the final rulings in the bounty suspension appeals, the league over which he presides continues to declare the players? guilt.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday, via the Associated Press, that the evidence is ?overwhelming.?

?The investigation was thorough and includes statements from multiple sources with firsthand knowledge about the details of the program, corroborating documentation and other evidence,? Aiello said.? ?The enforcement of the bounty rule is important to protect players that are put at risk by this kind of scheme.?

Aiello?s comments come on the same day that Saints quarterback Drew Brees is questioning via an all-day media blitz the quality of the league?s case, and four days after NFL general counsel Jeff Pash touted the ?mosaic? of evidence that was presented during the June 18 appeal hearings.

?Certainly, Drew Brees would not want to be the target in a bounty scheme and that is why we must eliminate bounties from football,? Aiello said.

Given the league?s views, the appeals should have been denied by now.? As Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma said Monday, ?What?s this guy waiting on?? Make your ruling so we can get on with phase 2 already.?

Also, the dueling soundbites from the league and Brees further illustrate that, ultimately, the bounty case has become an exercise in semantics.? No players were paid to injure other players.? Instead, the Saints created a system for financially rewarding players who in the normal course of delivering big, clean, legal hits rendered an opponent unable to play in all or part of the remainder of the game.? Though that?s one of the realities of a game in which success is premised partially on attrition, the league believes that creating that kind of incentive could lead to deliberate attempts to injure, whether through legal hits or through illegal hits.

The players believe the NFL has tried to suggest that the Saints were doing something far more sinister than the jobs they?re already paid to do (i.e., hit the other guy as hard as you can, cleanly and legally).? The NFL believes that, regardless of the language used to describe it, the concept of offering players money for rendering opponents unable to continue to play is inherently sinister, and thus unacceptable.

Regardless of how it all plays out, Aiello?s comments make clear that there?s no reason to further delay the rulings on the appeals.? Phase One clearly is over; it?s time to get on with Phase Two.

Rockie Fresh Prepping Electric Highway Mixtape

Chicago rapper reveals the title of his latest project exclusively to MTV News.
By Nadeska Alexis

Chicago has bred plenty of legendary hip-hop artists, but the city's youngest crop of rappers are ready to usher in a new era for the Midwest. Among those leading the pack is Rockie Fresh, who will follow up his January mixtape Driving 88 with a new project titled Electric Highway this fall.

The 21-year-old Southside native has released several notable mixtapes over the past few years, including 2011's The Otherside Redux and this year's Driving 88, which found him collaborating with Casey Veggies and fellow Chi-town rapper King Louie. But Rockie's confident that current recording sessions will result in his best work yet.

"It's called Electric Highway," Rockie told MTV News exclusively, revealing the title. "I always want to do original music even if it's a mixtape, so it's definitely a free album, but all of the records are going to be original. With me getting older and seeing different parts of the world, my content is always going to be evolving, so this is going to be the peak of Rockie Fresh. Out of all of the stuff that I've done, I think this is going to be my best work and I'm really looking forward to dropping it."

Rockie's fans will certainly be looking forward to the project, as will a few industry heavyweights who also have their eye on the young rapper. During a visit to New York City's Hot 97 radio station this week, Maybach Music Group CEO Rick Ross sent a "shout out to the lil' homie Rockie Fresh," adding, "I'm a fan of his music." And even though Rozay confirmed that Rockie hasn't been signed to MMG "as of now," they certainly have a good relationship going.

"That was crazy," Rockie told MTV News just hours after the shout-out from Ross. "Me and him, we've been talking a lot back and forth. That's definitely one of my big homies."

While Rockie continues to explore his label options, you'd better believe that he'll stay buried in his work. While on tour over the past few months, he gave fans the chance to keep up with his everyday grind through the vlog series "Life on the Otherside."

"[It's] to let people know that sh-- is real," he said matter-of-factly. "A lot of people utilize the Internet to stunt and it kind of gets old after a while. I really want people to see my climb, to really respect the work ethic that goes into it, and even for them just to be motivated by it. [It's] to let other young artists know that the struggle is something everybody has to go through. It's not a smooth road, so I just feel like it's dope to really show people the real picture."

Cornerback Alphonso Smith doesn?t care whether the Lions are trying to trade him, and he won?t care until they do.

Smith, picked by the Broncos in the second round of the 2009 draft after Denver shipped a 2010 first-rounder to Seattle, was sent to Detroit after only one season for tight end Dan Gronkowski.? Earlier this year, rumors surfaced that the Lions could move Smith in an effort to beef up their secondary.

?Please forgive my frankness,? Smith told Dave Dye of FOXSportsDetroit.com.? ?To be blunt with you, I really didn?t care.? It didn?t happen.? It still may happen.? You never know.

?I don?t care about reports or rumors.? Only thing I can focus on is I?m a Detroit Lion and I?m a Detroit Lion until I?m not.?

His preference would be to continue to wear Honolulu blue.

?I want to be here,? Smith said.? ?I?ve grown a lot with the scheme and the players and the things that the coaches want.? But that decision is way above my pay grade.? My job is to come in and play, not deal in personnel or whether I?m getting traded or not. . . .? Really don?t care.?

Smith does care that he?s in a contract year.? With his first-ever shot at free agency coming in March, he has every reason to play well, regardless of where he ends up playing.

If he stays in Detroit, he may have a chance to play plenty.? He could end up filling the vacancy in the starting lineup created by the departure of Eric Wright via free agency.

?One of the ways I try to separate myself is making plays,? Smith said.? ?As I look around, if you talk about playmakers in the secondary, I?ll probably be the first on that list.? That?s how I separate myself. . . .? Do my job.? Don?t give up any big ones and make plays when it?s there.?

Regardless of whether Smith gets traded, the Lions need someone to not ?give up any big ones? and ?make plays when it?s there? in 2012.? If not, the Lions won?t get any farther than they did in 2011.

NBA star?s gay slur shows pros don?t know Twitter

By Bob Sullivan

All winter long, New York Knicks star player Amar?e Stoudemire plays in front of packed basketball arenas. Often, when on the road, he must stand on the foul line and hit critical shots while ignoring taunts screamed at him by 20,000 or more enemy fans.?

So why couldn't he ignore one comparatively tame tweet from a Knicks fan critical of his play?

Stoudemire is the latest professional athlete to land in social media hot water after he replied privately on Twitter this weekend to the fan. In just 140 characters, he managed to squeeze in two words we won't publish on msnbc.com, including one hateful gay slur: ?"F#&# you.? I don't have to do anything, F#@."

The recipient took a screen capture of the private direct message and posted it publicly. Within hours, a typical Internet firestorm ensued. The NBA now says it is investigating.

The fan, who identifies himself as 19 years old on his Twitter account, loves the Knicks so much he uses the team logo as his background image. But he's not innocent.? He taunted Stoudemire, who he says is one of his favorite players, by urging him to "come back a lot stronger and quicker to make up for this past season" -- nothing wrong there -- but closed the note like this: "mannnnnn deadasss!!!"

While no one wants to be in the business of ranking foul language, clearly Stoudemire upped the ante with his response.? Literally and figuratively, Stoudemire should have been the bigger man.

The fan has declined interviews, saying, "I don't want to make this situation any bigger than it is," a mature response that Stoudemire could easily have employed this weekend.

It's time professional athletes realized that social media is a lot bigger than they think it is.

Stoudemire's Twitter transgression is hardly the first, and it won't be the last.? It is, however, shocking that an athlete being paid more than $20 million annually could be thrown off his game so easily.? And it's almost unbelievable that professional sports teams that spend hundreds of millions of dollars crafting their image leave so much to chance on Twitter and Facebook.

It's not as if the sports leagues can't control social media usage -- the National Basketball Association prohibits players from Tweeting 45 minutes before games, during games, and after games until media leave the locker room. Other leagues have similar restrictions.?

Still, Twitter regret is a fixture in the sports world. Then Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was fined last season for complaining about umpires on Twitter. Several NFL players were criticized for saying they were enjoying the NFL lockout last summer. And NBA pariah Gilbert Arenas was fined after he tweeted that he would be "direct sexting in no time" last year.

Stoudemire's direct response to a fan raised the stakes however. ?His casual use of a gay slur also shows just how far the NBA has to go to make its environment accepting of all sexual orientations.? The NBA might look to the NHL for inspiration; last year, the hockey league joined the impressive "You Can Play" initiative after a team general manager's son became the first openly gay player in the minor leagues.? The player, Brendan Burke, died in a car crash in 2010.

In addition to the offensive language, it's amazing that some athletes fail to prepare for the reputation risk which comes from social media, and that professional leagues haven't managed to control it. The contrast with college sports here is stark; across the country, many colleges are trying to ban athletes from using social media, or hiring technology companies to monitor them closely.?

This approach has raised serious First Amendment issues, but it at least shows the schools are taking the risks seriously.

There is a distinct difference, however, when a professional sports team pays an athlete millions of dollars as part of a profit-making venture. Schools shouldn?t force teenage lacrosse players off Facebook, and they probably don?t have the right to such a free speech restriction, but a pro team can surely control how its highly compensated employee interacts with the public. ?

The Twitter regret issue should be interesting to watch during the upcoming London Olympic games, where a combination of highly paid professionals and amateurs, along with very excited family members, might lead to some embarrassing social media moments. Already, famous British swimmer and former silver medalist Sharron Davies is calling for a Twitter blackout by U.K. athletes during the games.

?It?s always something that is a bit of a risk, that some silly story would overshadow the good stuff we were doing,? Davies told the Mirror. ?For that short period, a month, let?s not take a risk.?

For his part, Stoudemire did apologize, seemingly without prompting, several hours later.

"I apologize for what I said earlier. I just got off the plane and had time to think about it. Sorry bro!! No Excuses. Won't happen again," he wrote in another private message posted by the recipient.

Stoudemire had a frustrating, injury-riddled season that ended with him embarrassingly punching a glass door after a playoff loss to eventual league champion Miami Heat. Angry punches and glass don't mix well. The resulting injury caused Stoudemire to miss a playoff game and limited him for the rest of the series.

Frustration and the instant gratification of social media are an even more toxic mixture. If someone paid me $20 million a year, I'd pay for 24/7 public relations help with my Twitter account.? Seems a sensible way to keep the fouls on the court.

Use Of C Microcontroller Needed To Be Learnt Through The C Programming For Microcontrollers

For most of the graduates in technology, building small units containing microprocessors or microcontrollers can be fun. And, these works are also very interesting. The very idea of putting a microcontroller into a newly built semiconductor, or even into something, as simple as a remote controller, is very exciting.

?

To be able to build such instruments, people need to understand the basics of microcontrollers, by going through the c programming for microcontrollers. C for microcontrollers is the basic step of these systems. In other words, this is the first step of any kind of tutorial for c microcontrollers. These consist of a series of words or numbers that are to be fed into the circuitry, so that the commands are aptly read by the instruments containing these microcontrollers.

?

For most parts, and all practical purposes, the first embedded system of such applications featured the 8051 microcontrollers that were designed by the engineers of Intel.

Since then, this particular variant has undergone significant alterations to produce more sophisticated instruments and equipments. The technology has reached to an extent where the nanotechnology is being used to make the semiconductors, keeping the newest chips inside various instruments.

?

8051 microcontroller tutorial is therefore, the basics of any class that is supposed to provide knowledge on embedded c programming.

And very rightly, a lot many institutes that are imparting education on electronics and computers, do provide these kinds of 8051 microcontroller tutorials. In the world of computers and technological development, students are making it a point to go for the c programming for microcontrollers, where the basics are started with 8051 microcontroller tutorial and then the more advanced systems are taught.

?

On the whole, this allows the students to be conversant with the advanced technologies in the modern day instruments. With the knowledge of the RAM, CPU, hard disk, remote control, monitor, etc, in respect to the embedded c programming, the students can go on to work in various famous companies which are engaged in manufacturing such products, that are used in the electronic and computing industries.

?

It is during the training of c programming for microcontrollers that the difficulty level is taught to the students, wherein they learn the, more complicated lessons. But the c for microcontrollers is the most essential of the topics for all the students who want to reach higher goals in the path of embedded technologies, which is the fad in present day technological advancements. To aid the students in such an endeavour to learn the c programming for microcontrollers, many organisations and short course tutorials are on offer, which teach the basics of the c microcontroller.

Gamera II Team Smashes Previous Best Human-Powered Helicopter Flight Time

Zothecula writes "For over 30 years, the $250,000 for the American Helicopter Society's Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition prize has looked decidedly secure, but Gamera II has changed all that. Last week, Clark School of Engineering team pilots came close to breaking one of the competition's major milestones. Ph.D. candidate from Kyle Gluesenkamp from the School's mechanical engineering department, hand-cranking and pedaling like his life depended on it, managed to keep the huge quad-rotor craft aloft for 50 seconds, an impressive new world record that's currently awaiting validation by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA)." We previously covered their attempt to break the record last May.

Texas' Josh Hamilton to be focus of biopic

Hamilton on film

Josh Hamilton's life reads like a movie script and, sure enough, a film about the Texas Rangers slugger is in the planning stages.

Hamilton has given rights to producer Basil Iwanyk and Thunder Road Pictures for a movie to be written and directed by Casey Affleck, the entertainment website Deadline.com reported.

Hamilton, of course, battled back from drug and alcohol abuse to become a star with the Rangers, and he won the American League most-valuable-player award in 2010.

He's hot again this year, ranking among the AL leaders in home runs and runs batted in. On May 8, he hit four home runs in Baltimore, becoming only the 16th player in history to homer four times in a game.

Hamilton's life "is an extraordinary odyssey," one that took him from addiction and estrangement from his family "to a spectacular rebirth of his life, faith, marriage and major-league career," Deadline.com quoted Iwanyk as saying.

Now the question is: Which actor could play the 31-year-old Hamilton, who is 6 feet 4 and weighs about 240 pounds?

Dickey forecast

The amazing run of knuckleball pitcher R.A. Dickey has sparked a torrent of commentary, including this query: If Dickey leads his New York Mets to the playoffs, would he still be effective in colder weather?

The theory is that knuckleball pitchers tend to lose their feel for the baseball when temperatures drop. But a glance at past knuckleballers indicates that might not be true.

Tim Wakefield was 33-36 during his career in June, according to a monthly breakdown by Baseball-Reference.com. The website lumps September and October together, and in that period Wakefield was 33-33.

Phil Niekro ("Knucksie") was 58-43 in June and 50-47 in the September/October period. Hoyt Wilhelm was 21-29 in June and 36-14 in September/October.

September can be plenty warm, of course, so that might skew the September/October figures away from the effect of cold days in October.

In any case, the World Series this year doesn't start until Oct. 24, by which time Dickey and the Mets ? if they get that far ? might have those hand warmers ready just in case.

Dickey is 11-1 with a 2.00 earned-run average and has won his last nine decisions. He's scheduled to start again Sunday against the New York Yankees.

Dickson shines

O'Koyea Dickson, a first baseman with the Dodgers' Class-A Great Lakes (Michigan) team, went two for three with a two-run home run to help the East win, 18-2, in the Midwest LeagueAll-Star game.

The San Francisco native, selected by the Dodgers in the 12th round of the first-year draft in 2011, was batting .331 with six home runs in 39 games for the Great Lakes Loons before the break.

Timberland nabs coach with state tourney pedigree

Former Columbia Rock Bridge soccer coach Kyle Austin has been hired to guide the boys program at Wentzville Timberland.

Austin comes to Timberland after coaching at Rock Bridge for four seasons, where he compiled a 76-30-2 record and guided the Bruins to a third place finished in the Class 3 state tournament in 2010 and 2011.

Last fall, Austin guided the Bruins to a 28-4 record capped by a 1-0 win over lee?s Summit West in the Class 3 third place game.

?Coach Austin is a great addition for us,? Timberland activities director Todd Hayes said. ?Things all just feel into place. We had an English opening, and he was looking for a job.?

Austin, who played high school soccer at William Chrisman in Independence, replaces Tim Shearin and takes over a Wolves? team that went 14-10 least season behind graduated senior Jack West (22 goals, five assists).

?My have relatives from the O?Fallon/St. Peters area, so I am familiar with a lot of the soccer programs out there,? Austin said. ?I knew that Wentzville is an up-and-coming community and that it?s growing pretty fast. I know that good soccer is played there, so I knew that this would be an amazing opportunity for me.?

Back in 2010, West and his Wolves? teammates finished 20-7-1, and made it to the Class 3 quarterfinals where a 1-0 loss to eventual state runner-up Vianney knocked the team from the tournament.

While West may be gone, Austin says that there is still plenty of talent and enthusiasm around the Timberland program as he takes over.

?There is a lot of skill there,? Austin said. ?There is a lot of skill to build from. I have been very impressed in how willing they are already to come out and get some work in. I think there is a lot of talent from the freshman on up to the varsity.?

Hayes said that he sees the hiring of Austin as a great opportunity for Timberland boys soccer.

He said that there is already a buzz around the school when it comes to the new boys soccer coach.

?He came up because he?d said he wanted to meet with the team after he got the job,? Hayes said. ?I think it was like the last day of school for us, and there were 35, 40 kids there wanting to meet the new coach. I think (the students) were impressed. Coach was impressed, and I was impressed.?

For Austin, the move to St. Louis not only gives him a fresh start in coaching soccer, but it also gives him a chance to spend a little time with his family.

Austin?s wife, Kacy, and the couple?s daughter Addison, who was born in 2010, have been in the St. Louis area since the last school year while Kyle Austin had to remain behind, as he was under contract to Rock Bridge.

?My wife moved into St. Louis because of her job,? Austin said. ?I stayed in Columbia to finish out the year. Being away from my family for the year, I decided the best thing was to be with them, and to move on into St. Louis.?

As far as his expectations for Timberland go, Austin says that it?s going to take hard work to succeed, not just a coach?s name.

?It?s all about the kids,? Austin said. ?I have told anybody that will talk to me. It (the state semifinals appearances) looks great on a resume? but that?s it. It?s going to take hard work to succeed.?

Feds probe Ford Explorer power steering problems

(AP) ? Federal safety investigators are looking into complaints that the power steering can fail on 2011 Ford Explorer SUVs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem could affect 83,000 Explorers from the 2011 model year.

The agency says it has received 15 complaints about the problem. Drivers reported that it forced them to use more effort to steer the SUVs. No crashes or injuries have been reported to the government.

In some cases drivers got a warning message before the power steering quit. At times, restarting the SUVs corrected the problem.

An investigation could lead to a recall. The government says it is looking into how often the problem happens.

Messages were left Friday seeking comment from a Ford spokeswoman.

50-gigapixel camera is straight out of science fiction

8 hrs.

While photographers marvel at the 20 or 30 megapixels captured by the latest cameras, researchers at Duke laugh quietly and return to their lab to continue work on a system that could capture 50 gigapixels at the touch of a button.

For comparison, if your average point-and-shoot picture was the size of a word on this page, a 50-gigapixel shot would be around the size of your entire screen.

Gigapixels aren't new in and of themselves, of course: Enormous photos of the Milky Way or Obama's?inauguration are both effective demonstrations of the power of huge images. But generally these giant pictures are created by one camera that takes hundreds (or thousands) of shots, which are then?fitted together after the fact. Not a problem if you're taking pictures of stars, but no good?if you wanted to capture a flock of birds taking off.

The team at Duke, led by David Brady at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, decided to take things a different direction: instead of taking lots of pictures in sequence with one camera, why not take lots of pictures at once with a bunch of cameras?

The result is the AWARE-2 camera system, a machine that looks like something out of science fiction. It bristles with wires and ports, and houses?a lens array that could be the eye of an enormous robotic insect.

The system actually shares many characteristics with insects' compound eyes: A single image enters through a central lens, but is then refracted outward in 98 different directions to 98 different image sensors, each of which receives a different piece of the picture. The pieces are then assembled by a central processor.

Images produced by the system are enormous. 50 gigapixels is the maximum theoretical size, but even a fraction of that?that is far larger than any picture most people have ever taken. Look at the shot below; on this enormous landscape, the tiny white dots on the sky are in fact birds, captured in enough detail that you can zoom in and check out the details of their wings. (here's a larger version)

That's with a prototype device using only half the microcameras and the first generation of lenses designed for the system.?Brady explains that right now, the size and quality of images is limited by the quality of the main objective lens, but they have already built a superior lens for 10-gigapixel images.

50 gigapixels is the upper limit because it is the precision?limit of lens-manufacturing technology, and also because beyond that you start running into the resolution limit of the atmosphere, i.e. what can be discerned through all those pesky air molecules between the camera and the subject. So it's no surprise that they're considering imaging at that size for astronomical rather than terrestrial photography.

The applications of enormous images captured more or less instantly are easy to imagine, both in everyday life, academic research, and for the military, which is funding the project through DARPA.

The paper describing AWARE-2 was published in the journal Nature, and the authors have put together a separate?site with more information and lots of?pictures for the curious.

Kinetis L Series MCUs use ARM Cortex-MO+ to sip least power, cost 49 cents each per 10K order

kinetis-l-series-mcus-use-arm-cortex-mo-least-power

Freescale aims to drag 8- and 16-bit manufacturing into the modern era with a 32-bit MCU that's cheaper than a cup o' Joe. The ARM Cortex-MO+ based Kinesis L series MCU is now available in alpha to interested parties, it's capable of sipping a scant 50 µA/MHz of power and will cost just $0.49 when you buy 'em in lots of 10,000. While the cheap chips will no doubt go on to help power the internet of things, the associated debut of a $12.95 development board coming in August will also be a boon to developers and hobbyists. The platform will allow "quick application prototyping and demonstration" according to the company, and provide a GUI tool for generating start-up code and device drivers. So, if you've gotta have that new beer dispenser mock-up running at a full 32-bits, check the PR after the break.

The top ten games made possible by Kickstarter ? Video Games ...

Ever since Double Fine announced their Kickstarter campaign, then met their goal in eight hours, then blew past their goal by almost $3 million, the fundraising site has been one of the biggest movements in gaming.

Double Fine?s project certainly wasn?t the first game to show up on Kickstarter, but its wild success inspired a string of developers to seek funding directly from their audience. In a time when production costs have never been so high, Kickstarter lets developers work without fear of a financial bomb, while also letting die-hard fans be a part of the games they love.

Looking at the top ten most funded Kickstarter games, you see lots of risks being taken, like old franchises being pulled out of retirement and young studios trying to make their first titles ? and all of it is being made possible by backing from fans. Here?s a quick look at those top ten in reverse order, and what made each intriguing enough to meet its goal.

Republique ? $555,622 of $500,000 goal

Note: Since this writing, Tex Murphy: Project Fedora has jumped to the #8 spot, pushing Republique out of the top ten.

Half a million dollars may sound like a lot to develop a mobile game (and that?s only half the budget), but developer Camoflaj has big goals for their debut project: AAA quality, cutting edge graphics, real-time cinematics, and full voiceovers.

Republique takes place in a 1984-style totalitarian state, where a trapped young woman named Hope makes a desperate phone call for help. Players must keep Hope alive (see what they did there?) by hacking into the nation?s surveillance system to scout her surroundings, slam doors on her pursuers, and call elevators so she can get around. The narrative setup should create some really gripping puzzles that combine communicating with Hope and manipulating her environment.

Yogventures! ? $567,665 of $250,000 goal

As you might guess from the name, Yogventures! is a project from the people behind the Yogscast YouTube channel. The team has spent a fair amount of time making videos in Minecraft, so it?s no surprise that their game is grounded in the idea of a vast, randomly generated, and highly shapeable world.

So while you can expect to see the familiar Yogscast characters built in to Yogventures!, almost everything about the experience will be changeable and moddable. Yogscast and their partner Winterkewl Games are aiming to go beyond Minecraft?s blocky charm to a smoother, more stylized aesthetic, but without sacrificing all the exploring, building, and crafting of an open adventure world.

Concept art for Carmageddeon: Reincarnation

Carmageddon: Reincarnation ? $625,143 of $400,000 goal

In 1997, developer Stainless Games released the original Carmageddon, a violent vehicular combat game for the PC. The title was a financial success, and had a number of groundbreaking features, but when Stainless parted ways with their publisher they lost the rights to it. Since then the company has been focusing on creating downloadable titles like Risk: Factions and Magic: The Gathering ? Duels of the Planeswalkers, but recently they reacquired the rights to Carmageddon and are eager to bring it back.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation is already under development, and it?s a complete reboot of everything players loved about the original ? just with 15 years worth of graphics and physics engine improvements.

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded ? $655,182 of $500,000 goal

Continuing the ?modern remake of a once-popular but long-abandoned game series? trend, developer Replay Games is rebooting the sexually-themed Leisure Suit Larry franchise, backed by creator Al Lowe and a number of the original developers.

No longer constrained by the whims of a publisher, Replay is hoping to remake the original game with not only updated 2D graphics, but also more jokes, more puzzles, and animated cutscenes. The game?s classic point-and-click stylings should be a natural fit for the mobile platforms it?s planned for.

Screenshot of The Banner Saga

The Banner Saga ? $723,886 of $100,000 goal

The Banner Saga?s most obvious virtue is its gorgeous hand-drawn aesthetic and motion-captured animations, but it?s got a lot going for it beyond the visuals. The studio behind the game was founded by three former Star Wars: The Old Republic developers, who aspire (as you might expect from that pedigree) to tell a deep, mature story full of meaningful decisions and consequences. It also doesn?t hurt that the game?s score is being composed by Austin Wintory, who?s gotten a lot of praise for his work on the PSN-exclusive Journey.

The components of the boardgame Zombicide

Zombicide ? $781,597 of $20,000 goal

The Left4Dead games proved that zombies bring people together, even when tearing them apart. Zombicide takes that idea and drops it onto the tabletop, where 1-6 players control a group of survivors working together in urban environments. But unlike the Left4Dead games, Zombicide isn?t just about pushing forward and occasionally holding your ground; sometimes players will need to go on the offensive and take the fight to the undead, giving the gameplay a natural ebb and flow.

The game?s comic book visual style is rounded out by some very detailed miniatures, which include multiple variations for even basic zombie types ? a nice touch.

Steve Jackson and his new edition of Ogre

Ogre ? $923,680 of $20,000 goal

If you play board/card games on a regular basis, you?re probably familiar with Steve Jackson games, or at least their popular Munchkin series. So why does such a successful developer need a Kickstarter campaign? The company is looking to honor Steve?s first design, the futuristic war game Ogre, with a massive 14-pound ?Designer?s Edition.?

Since the new release will be expensive to produce, the company used the Kickstarter as a way to gauge interest and sell pre-orders, something they normally don?t do. Thanks to getting enough donations to meet their stretch goals, Steve Jackson Games announced that they?ll be able to double the originally planned play area.

The logo for Shadowrun Returns

Shadowrun Returns ? $1,836,447 of $400,000 goal

The cyberpunk/fantasy world of Shadowrun has appeared on a wide variety of platforms over the years, but it started life as a pen-and-paper RPG designed by Jordan Weisman in 1989. Now Weisman and his new company, Harebrained Schemes, are planning to bring the franchise back once more, this time to PCs, Macs, and tablets.

Despite the modern platforms, Harebrained wants the game to do right by the original version and its fans. The turn-based gameplay will allow players to get the most out of the four character types (Street Samurai, Combat Mages, Hackers/Deckers, and Shaman), each of which have a different view of the world?s magical/technological overlappings. The developers also plan to release their level editor when the game launches, ensuring that Shadowrun Returns is a place where anyone can tell a story.

Concept art for Wasteland 2

Wasteland 2 ? $2,933,252 of $900,000 goal

Before there was Fallout, there was Wasteland, the 1998 post-apocalyptic RPG that inspired it. But unlike Bethesda?s recent first-person takes on Fallout, inXile entertainment wants to revisit Wasteland while holding to the game?s top-down, turn-based, party-based tactical roots.

Old hands from the original game and the first two Fallout titles are on board to make sure Wasteland 2 is a faithful exercise: Brian Fargo, executive producer of both Wasteland and Fallout; Alan Pavlish and Mike Stackpole, Wasteland?s primary designers; and Mark Morgan, who composed the music for Fallout 1 and 2.

The logo for Double Fine Adventure

Double Fine Adventure ? $3,336,371 of $400,000 goal

Coming full circle, the project that really got the ball rolling on using Kickstarter to fund game development remains at the top of the list with $3.3 million. Since the working title Double Fine Adventure is fairly nondescript, we know less about this game than any of the other top ten. But to fans of classic point-and-click adventure games, the only two development details that matter are Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer ? two LucasArts veterans who know the genre as well as anyone in the business.

Whatever Double Fine Adventure turns out to be, expect it to be something special, but ultimately its legacy will be sparking a trend that gave many other games a chance at success.
