Data Backup and Business Continuity are crucial | Alvarez ...

Data Backup RecoveryOnce upon a time, it was expensive, cumbersome and tedious to create business continuity and backup and recovery plans for businesses. With the advent of virtualization and cloud computing, that?s no longer the case. Business leaders can no longer hide behind those convenient excuses for not preparing their companies for ?any eventuality.?

Business continuity and disaster recovery aren?t solely about picking up and moving on after the worst happens. They?re about having plans in place that will allow you to continue doing business no matter what happens, a power outage, a disgruntled employee absconding with client lists or, yes, a natural disaster. Your mission-critical company data are safely stored on a remote server or in the cloud, ready and able to be recovered and used at a moment?s notice.

Lugging around external hard drives or buying extra servers and leasing space somewhere away from your office to store them in are no longer necessary for efficient data backup and recovery. If your company?s budget can support buying extra servers and space in which to store them, and you feel safer doing that, well that?s great. It means you can also afford to pay for additional people to maintain them and ensure that data are being properly backed up. But if your company?s budget can?t support that kind of expense, that?s okay, too, because it doesn?t have to.

Managed IT services providers (MSP) abound. They serve large enterprises, medium businesses, small businesses, even independent contractors. The business continuity and backup and recovery strategies they propose for their clients often come as part of an overall service package. They regularly check to make sure that your server(s) is being backed up properly and that the saved data can, if necessary, be recovered quickly and effectively.? So, you don?t have to worry about any nasty surprises should the need ?to recover important company files that were destroyed in a natural disaster or stolen by an illustrious hacker ever arise. Virtualization makes getting your business up and running during a power outage quick and painless. It also facilitates working remotely in the event of fire, flood or any other type of destructive event.

Take the time to do some research and find a reliable, trustworthy MSP that specializes in working with companies the same size as yours and in the same industry. Most offer no-obligation consultations, so talk to several and see what each feels are the best business continuity and disaster recovery strategies for your business. Talk about the pros and cons of virtualization and cloud computing and how one or both of these solutions could be integrated into an effective business continuity and/or disaster recovery plan.

Of course, you hope that your business will never be destroyed by fire or natural disaster, that your system never gets infiltrated by a hacker and that no employee ever walks off with valuable company files, but if such a thing did happen, wouldn?t you want to be prepared with a business continuity or disaster recovery plan that would ensure that you could keep doing business as usual and keep you and your employees productive?

Miami Dolphins MinicampGetty Images

Plenty of teams said ?no? to Hard Knocks, for various reasons.? The Dolphins agreed to do it.

On Tuesday, coach Joe Philbin discussed the situation, calling it a ?football decision.?

Seriously.

?We?re excited that NFL Films and HBO has chosen the Miami Dolphins to appear on Hard Knocks,? Philbin said, via the video box on the right rail of the site.? ?I want you to know a couple things about the decision.? Number one, it was a football decision.? It was made by the football operations staff.? Our owner, [Stephen Ross], supported our decision but in no way, shape, or form forced us to make this decision.?

Many will believe otherwise, especially since G.M. Jeff Ireland grew up in the Bill Parcells school of ultra-secrecy.

But as the Dolphins struggle to generate interest in the team via conventional means (you know, by winning more games than they lose), the team has to do something to get people sufficiently engaged to buy tickets to the games.? Thus, the Dolphins are now more available to the media ? and they?ll be even more available once the NFL Films cameras and microphones show up.

To the extent that the appearance arises from a football decision, Philbin didn?t really articulate a football reason.? He said the that show will ?showcase our players? and provide a ?great opportunity for us to communicate with our fans.?? While those concerns reflect prudent business reasons, there?s no obvious basis for the move, from a football standpoint.

In contrast, Vince Lombardi liked having NFL Films camera crews around because it made his players work harder.? If that?s the basis for the ?football decision,? why not say so?

And so the Dolphins will deny that the move was driven by dollars and cents, and the rest of us won?t believe them.? But at least we finally know who the team will be, even if the end result likely will be far less compelling than if the Jets, Saints, Broncos, Colts, or Redskins had done it.

Social Media For Business: Walk Before You Can Run | Business ...

One of the most common misconceptions about businesses using social media is that people think it is easy and a cheap alternative to traditional marketing. You can just picture it. The boss walks in to the office and asks who is on Facebook, some luckless member of staff puts their hand up and, hey presto, they are the new social media manager.

Business use of social media cannot be used on a whim, as a knee jerk reaction because someone, somewhere read an article about it in the Chamber of Commerce newsletter. Handled badly social media interaction with existing and potential customers could actually do your business more harm than good.

Silence Is Golden

Your first action when starting social media is not to rush out and blast the Internet with sales pitches ? it is to listen. Using the tools available in Twitter and Facebook first see if anyone is already talking about your company. If so the odds are it could be detrimental, but just hold that thought, don?t charge in to try and rectify any collateral damage.

Next, see what others in your business sector are doing and what the clientele is talking about, Make notes about the style, tone, messages and profile that your rivals are using and see how the people are reacting. Why reinvent the wheel?

Audit your audience. Look at the social profiles of your existing and potential clientele and choose your social media platforms accordingly. If, for example your products or services are largely directed at a female audience then Pinterest is a must over and above Twitter or Facebook.

Audit your existing web presence. Make sure that your web site can accommodate link buttons to your social media platforms, Is all the information there that potential clients need to do business with you?Get some third party input from people who might be able to spot gaps or mistakes.

Social Media Is Human

Nobody uses social media to have sales messages rammed down their throats. Create your social media profile to be approachable, friendly, trustworthy ? all the traits you would look for in human friend. A sense of humour is great, just remember that everyone?s idea of what is funny varies tremendously. Used wrongly humour will please some and alienate others.

One of the best ways to humanise your business is to create a blog, write about the people in the business, case studies from satisfied clients, run posts from key members of staff about their take on business or even their charity walk. If your social media presence is an online equivalent of the annual report you?ve blown it!

Setting Goals And ROI

While business social of social media should be enjoyable don?t lose track of the fact that it is another marketing tool and like all marketing activities it should make a positive contribution to the bottom line. The most obvious goal is to to monitor how effective it is in bringing in new business. It?s pretty simplistic but log how many sales enquiries you receive or have received before your social media campaign launched and then log any increases one it has started.

Setting a goal gives you focus, to understand why you?re blogging and using Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest anyway. Goal-setting is always an exploration of purpose, so take the time to explore. Don?t fall into the trap that the only metric that matters is popularity and the number of readers, followers, friends, subscribers, and viewers you can amass.

Long Term V Sprint

Don?t fall on your sword if your goals aren?t achieved in the first few months. Social media is a long term strategy, not a sprint. Examine your goals and strategy to re-tweak if necessary but don?t throw the baby out with the bathwater in an attempt to justify your campaign.

As a guide to goal setting you cannot do better than read the advice of Ching Ya, take time to read her past and present blogs, there?s a wealth of advice there.

Finally you will need tools to help you sift through all the data. I cannot praise HootSuite enough which is why it is one of the few affiliate programmes that I subscribe to. Do thge job properly and buy the Pro versions and you have an all in one social media tool that helps you push your message out and to receive reports on how effective you are.

Forcing the FCC to Act on Conservative Talk Radio | MyFDL

MyFDL readers will remember my talking last year about why we need to Occupy Radio.?? Walking into any radio station during normal business hours and demanding to see their public files is an empowering way to understand that WE the PEOPLE own the radio airwaves, and that radio stations must serve our needs in order to get a license to broadcast.

Still, while it?s educational and it?s shed light on how much money political ads are pouring into stations? coffers, it has done nothing to alter the imbalance we find on Talk Radio all over the country.?? (Better than 90% of the nation can ONLY hear Right Wing Talk on their radio dials.)

But now, with the help of staff and volunteers at Media Action Center Wisconsin, we have launched an action which the FCC cannot ignore.

May 22,? Media Action Center Wisconsin released results of the Scott Walker Recall Talk Radio Monitoring Project.? We revealed that Clear Channel Radio?s WISN and Journal Communications? Radio WTMJ are each giving supporters of Scott Walker and the GOP?about $70,000 in free airtime every day over the air, and virtually nothing to the Democrats.

Tom Barrett supporters cried foul, and demanded comparable time from the stations, citing the little known FCC regulation, the quasi-equal opportunities doctrine, or ?Zapple.?? The stations failed to comply,?so May 24th, I filed a formal complaint with the FCC on their behalf.

We are asking the FCC to immediately order the stations to comply with comparable time rules and give 80 minutes daily to Tom Barrett supporters throughout the remainder of the election.

The FCC has already responded, and are reviewing it now.? They will try to answer this immediately, but acknowledge the case ? and its implications for talk radio are ?huge.?

That?s implications for Rush Limbaugh, for Glenn Beck, for Sean Hannity, for ALL talkers, not just those in Milwaukee.? (This will impact the 2012 campaigns; look for a Constitutional showdown on this one, folks.)

But the FCC tends to sweep such things under the rug, and I need your help to prevent that from happening!

Right Wing Talk Radio needs to be put in its place;? this is our very best shot.? Please help us make it count.

Apple looking to hire engineers at Israel R&D facility

We've heard that Apple intends to step up hiring at a new research center in Israel, and here is more evidence of that effort. Two new job listings have appeared on Apple's site for physical design engineers in Haifa, Israel, showing that Apple is getting serious about building out its new R&D center.

These engineers will work on designs for "system-on-a-chip" implementations. Which, of course, is exactly the kind of technology that Apple is so good at stuffing into tiny mobile devices. The open positions are high level placements, with job requirements that expect to see these SoC designs from beginning to end. It'll probably take Apple a while to fill these positions with the right people, so we likely won't see actual chips come out of these facilities for a while. But the company clearly has an eye forward to making the site there an important one for Apple's future devices.

Apple looking to hire engineers at Israel R&D facility originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog on Fri, 25 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Learning About Junction City Pain Management

The whole subject of Junction City pain management is very facinating to me.? People go to great lengths to manage the pain that they experience by taking drugs, getting surgery and a plethora of other things.? I couldn?t figure out why people would want to just manage their pain instead of fixing the cause for it.

My chiropractor told me a little bit about it since I asked him.? Some people have injuries that are more severe and require a longer healing period.? Those individuals may require pain management otherwise they would suffer much more.

The best form of pain management though IS to find out what the cause of the problem is, and then fix it.? If you have a broken leg, of course the doctor isn?t going to just give you some pills and then check on you later to see if you?re better.? He?ll fix the broken leg so the body can begin to heal itself, then prescribe pain meds as needed.? It?s the same for a chiropractor.? They find the problem for the pain one experiences and can do adjustments to the body to correct the problem and remove the source of the pain.

(AP) ? Driving rain pelted Mexico's Pacific coast early Saturday as a weakened Tropical Storm Bud moved by a string of laid-back beach resorts and small mountain villages south of Puerto Vallarta.

Emergency officials were on high alert for flooding and mudslides despite the storm's decreasing speed and power.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said that maximum sustained winds that were once blowing at 115 mph (185 kph) had slowed to 60 mph (95 kph) by Friday night. The government of Mexico changed the hurricane warning for the coast of Mexico from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes to a tropical storm warning. Hurricane watches were also discontinued.

Heavy rain started Friday night in Puerto Vallarta and rainfall was expected to accumulate from 6 to 10 inches in many spots. Mexican authorities canceled school in 11 communities expected to be hit by heavy rains in Jalisco state. Emergency workers prepared emergency shelters, many of them in empty school classrooms.

The state was placed on high alert as the storm center neared land, and emergency officials in Puerto Vallarta said they were closely monitoring villages that had been hit by flooding and mudslides in previous hurricanes and tropical storms.

But on Friday night the sea along the city's famous beachfront appeared calm. Swimming was temporarily banned as a precaution.

Rains and 6-foot (2-meter) high waves pelted Melaque, a beach town on the Bahia de Navidad, about 60 mph (100 kilometers) east of the sparsely populated stretch of coast where the storm's center was expected to come ashore during the night.

Category 2 Hurricane Jova hit the area in October, killing six people and flooding parts of Melaque and neighboring Barra de Navidad.

"There was a lot of flooding in the whole area, and we lost electricity," recalled Rafael Galvez, manager of the Hotel Bahia in Melaque. But this week, he said, only seven of his hotel's 26 rooms were occupied, and none of the hotel's guests were planning to leave.

Streets in some coastal towns were filled with water.

The hurricane center said the storm could brush land then make a U-turn and head back out into the Pacific. Rain, rather than wind, could be the big threat, with the center warning of the "potential for life-threatening mudslides" in steep terrain inland.

The government of Jalisco state prepared hundreds of cots and dozens of heavy vehicles such as bulldozers that could be needed to move debris.

A separate storm was pounding much of Cuba and the Bahamas on Friday. Cuba's civil defense agency reported that a French citizen, Alain Manaud, and Silvestre Fortun Alvarez of Cuba were missing after trying to cross rain-swollen rivers, according to the government's Prensa Latina news agency. It said a search for them was continuing.

An official at the French Embassy in Havana said Manaud was 66 and had lived in Cuba for several years. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly.

The agency quoted government meteorologists as saying more than 20 inches (500 millimeters) of rain had fallen on parts of the central province of Sancti Spiritus.

The hurricane center reported that the system had about a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical or subtropical cyclone.

Off the Atlantic coast of the U.S., there were tropical storm warnings for the Southeast coast from northeastern Florida to South Carolina as a cluster of thunderstorms gathered strength and was expected to become Tropical Storm Beryl over the Memorial Day weekend.

Earthquakes top Galaxy in stoppage time

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Alan Gordon scored in stoppage time as the San Jose Earthquakes rallied from a late two-goal deficit to beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 Wednesday night.

The Earthquakes (8-2-3) went into the 75th minute down 2-0, but Steven Lenhart scored off a corner kick and Khari Stephenson converted a penalty kick to tie the score. Just seconds before time expired. Gordon finished a bouncing cross for the winning goal.

"I just was following up the play, I think there may have been a little bit of hesitation on their part and I was just seeing the play through," said Gordon after scoring his fourth goal of the season. "They hesitated, I didn't, I finished it. Forwards get lucky sometimes, I got lucky, who cares, I put it in, end of story period."

Hector Jimenez and Mike Magee scored for Los Angeles.

The Galaxy went ahead in third minute when Jimenez sent a close-range shot past San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch for his first MLS goal.

Los Angeles played a man down after Jimenez received a red card in the 60th minute for a tackle on Earthquakes defender Steven Beitashour. Still, the Galaxy doubled their lead on Magee's goal in the 73rd minute.

In the 76th, Lenhart scored off Marvin Chavez's corner kick. Just six minutes later, Stephenson tied it on a penalty kick that was set up when referee Jair Marrufo called a handball on David Beckham in the box.

The comeback was complete four minutes into stoppage time when a Galaxy turnover led to in a Jason Hernandez cross that Gordon headed in for the game winning goal.

After extending their winless streak to six matches, the defending MLS Cup champion Galaxy (3-7-2) were left searching for answers.

"We know we played well but also we're extremely disappointed. We can't be up 2-0 at home and they get three unanswered goals. That's just unacceptable," defender Sean Franklin said. "It just seems like we can't get any luck to go our way - a bounce, a call, something. It just seems like things aren't going the way we wanted them to go."

The Earthquakes scored in th 88th minute or later for the fifth time this season - with four of those ending in either a win or a draw.

"We just like to make the game exciting. Goonies never say die," Lenhart said. "I think we are prepared this year. We have put in the work in training and we like each other, we show up every day and we all know we are committing to the 90 minutes, to play together and work for each other. It may not look that pretty but we know we are going to get the most out of our guys at the end of the day."

Social Phobia ? What to Do? | Baby care | Health and Fitness ...

There are a couple of things you can do!

First of all you need to define why you have social phobia. What are you not comfortable with?

Is it one of the following?

- I don?t like people to stare/look at me

- I care too much about what they think when I say something

- I?m afraid to say no (and feel guilty when I do)

- I?m afraid to stand up for myself

In these 4 cases you place a lot of value on what other people think of you. And you know what, that?s human. We need appraisal from others.

It becomes a problem when you place too much importance on what other people think of you. Maybe you try to be a chameleon sometimes, where you try to blend in, to be liked.

That?s what I did?

But it?s truly exhausting isn?t it? And for me it gave me panic attacks and weird symptoms in my body, so by the end of my problem, before I found the solution in 2004 I decided to skip as many social events as possible, to avoid those feelings.

So what is the solution? In one sentence?

?Every now and then you have to say what the F?. It?s a phrase I once heard in Risky Business, with Tom Cruise. And that phrase is amazing.

So what if they think I?m weird, stupid, dumb, egocentric,? SO what. That?s truly the solution.

But I realize it?s a lot easier said than done!

As you can see it?s really some mind management that can help you out here. Thinking: ?what will they think of me? or ?I don?t care what they think of me? will give you a totally different outcome.

The first sentence will give you anxiety, the second will not!

Do you have problems with social phobia? This is extremely common and many of us have this to one extent or another. But for some people this is a serious problem to the point where it interferes with their daily lives. When it gets to the point where you are beginning to see that you are avoiding certain situations and you are finding it difficult to get through your day because of your anxiety then there are some exercises you can try to help with your anxiety.

First off you should find out if your anxiety is truly from social phobia. Are you uncomfortable with any of the things below?

*People looking at or staring at me

*I put too much emphasis on what others think of me when I speak

*I feel guilty or I am afraid of saying no to people

*I have quite a bit of fear when I stand up for myself

These four cases have too much value being put on what others may be thinking about you. This is natural because we all want others to think highly of us and we like to have the approval of others. But when we put way to much weight on what others may be thinking about us it becomes quite a larger problem. Do you find yourself doing and saying things just because you think that is what others want from you?

This can get exhausting and stressful making your anxiety levels really skyrocket and could even lead to panic attacks. Continual stress will come out in many ways so if you are experiencing many of these symptoms like racing heart, nausea, dizziness, hard time breathing and swallowing just to name a few, then you are letting your anxiety get the better of you.

Try practicing not caring what others think about you. Try it out on someone, they don?t even have to know! Just think to yourself, ?I do not care what this person thinks. What they think doesn?t matter to me one bit.? Try it and see what happens and I bet your anxiety isn?t as high. This doesn?t mean that you are being mean to them, it is just an exercise to help you not care so much of what other may or may not be thinking about you.

Most times people really aren?t thinking about you as much as you think they are. Many times people are thinking about themselves and not about others so keep this in mind when you are practicing not caring what others are thinking about you.
