Think Pink: Breast Cancer Awareness Events in the Hudson Valley ...

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and whether you love to shop, attend events, walk or run, there are tons of different ways to support the cause. Check out these opportunities to go pink in the Hudson Valley. Know of other events? Please tell us in the comments and we'll add it here.?

  • The Support Connection holds its 18th Annual Support-a-Walk?Oct. 7. Pre-walk events start at 9 a.m. FDR Park, Yorktown?(Route 202 off the Taconic State Parkway). Learn at the Support Connection website.
  • The Sound Shore Medical Center's annual Accent on New Rochelle House Tour to benefit its Solomon Katz Breast Center is Oct. 14. It's always sold out, so get your tickets early.?
  • 2012 Making Strides of Westchester NY. 9 a.m. Oct. 21. Manhattanville College, Purchase. Sign up, donate, or learn more here.?
  • 2012 Making Strides of Hudson Valley NY. 9 a.m. Oct. 21, Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, Central Valley. Sign up, donate or learn more here.?
  • Sole Ryeders & Friends out of Rye has a team in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in NYC Oct. 20-21. Learn more at their website here.
  • The Wicked Wolf Tavern holds its annual fundraiser to support breast cancer research from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 4.?I Heart Boobs will be selling apparel and shot glasses along with raffling off a list of prizes that goes for miles! Pink Hair for Hope will be doing Pink hair extensions on stage with a $10 donation. Frankie K. Clothing will also be in the building selling his special "pink" apparel. 100 percent of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.?
  • A.C. Moore?is teaming up with associates and customers to raise Breast Cancer Awareness funds.?Their ?Crafting a Better World? Program will run?from Sept. 9-Oct. 13 and will benefit the American Cancer Society.?Since its launch in 2010, the program has raised more than?$900,000 for not-for-profit organizations that provide services in the communities in which?A.C. Moore?stores operate. Just donate $1 at checkout.
  • A bra-decorating contest, Jazz Up Your Foundation,?is being sponsored by?Hudson Valley Hospital Center. The contest registration deadline is Oct. 1 and submissions must be received by Oct. 19.?The entries will be displayed during?the?Breast Cancer Awareness Wellness Event?at the hospital in Cortlandt Oct. 25, where you can vote for your favorite Pink Drink created by local restaurants for the occasion.

There are even more ways to spread breast cancer awareness this month by supporting national organizations.

For example, the Rye-based support group Sole Ryeders will enter a team into the 39 mile, 2 day Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in New York City. For more information about the walk, please visit www.avonwalk.org.?New York residents will be participating in many other events, such as?the 5K walk/run organized by?the Manhasset Women?s Coalition Against Breast Cancer?in New York.?

Research centers like?Susan G. Komen for the Cure?are selling pink ribbon merchandise and it?s a twofer?retail therapy and donating to a cause that affects millions.

You can also support breast cancer research by affixing a special stamp to your mail. The U.S. Postal Service has been selling a stamp?commemorating breast cancer awareness for the past 15 years. The agency has raised $75 million so far for research programs at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

The American Cancer Society?s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is organized nationwide and so far more than 8 million people have walked for this cause and raised about $460 million.

And you can join people from four continents?in a Race for the Cure event organized by Susan G. Komen For The Cure, or an Avon Walk For Breast Cancer event organized by the Avon Foundation for Women.
