Today?s gorgeous family home comes to us from Adelaide, and belongs to multi-tasking creative Rebekah Cichero ? co-founder of Adelaide?s much loved Bowerbird Bazaar markets, and propertietor of sweet furniture and interiors shop One Small Room! ?Rebekah is one seriously energetic and inspiring creative, having lived in London for 8 years working as a stylist before settling down in Adelaide with partner Tim. If all this sounds a touch familiar, that?s because we?interviewed?Rebekah this time last year! ?(Re-visit our original interview for the full backstory!).

Nestled in Adelaide?s leafy suburb of Croydon, this generous Victorian family house actually backs onto Rebekah?s gorgeous little shop. ?It?s home to Rebekah and husband Timothy, plus?Ruby (8 yrs), Tobias (5 yrs) and Chico the dog. ?The family have been here nearly five years.

Whilst it still retains much of its original charm, this home has been thoroughly renovated and extended to modernise and open up it?s functional spaces for this busy family. ?These works happened in roughly two stages. ?The front rooms were renovated when the family first moved in, and room layout reconfigured to make way for an ensuite and walk-in robe in the master bedroom. ?A few years later the full home extension was completed ? including new open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area, and a new main bathroom. ?Rebekah and Timothy also?landscaped the front yard, added a new fence and rainwater tanks to ensure a healthy and productive garden, even in Adelaide?s notoriously dry summers.

If you?ve been to Rebekah?s sweet shop, One Small Room, then the eclectic edit of furniture and artwork here will be no surprise! ?As is often the case with creative retailers, Rebekah?s home is an extension of her shop and vice versa ? furniture and art finds itself on high rotation between both spaces. ??We often find new favourites when sourcing for the shop, so we move something out from home and sell it to someone else to love!? says Rebekah.

There are, however, a few treasured pieces she and Tim would never part with. ??We do have some favourite pieces, the stripped back carousel horse and the Le Corbusier ?LC 4? chaise (?Tim?s chair?) bought when we lived in London, pre-children? says Rebekah.?Other favourite pieces include two paintings by Jacob Logos. ??We all fell in love with the artwork of Jacob Logos, so deciding on the painting above the fireplace (Little Sundance)?and another above our bed (Evening Hunt) was a very easy decision? recalls Rebekah.

As is often the case with a weekly home features, it?s not so much the house but the whole neighbourhood which Rebekah and her family call home. ??We live right near the iconic ?Queen st? strip with the best bakery ever (Red Door Bakery) and of course our shop, only about a metre away from our home and office!? says Rebekah. ??Croydon is an amazing community of creative types, caring people who say hi when you walk by. Kids meet and play on Sundays while parents have coffee, you can get a good haircut, ride bikes and still be in the city in 7 minutes or to the beach in 15 or the hills in 40! Nothing?s too far away. We feel rather lucky here?. ?Ahhh Adelaide, such a Utopian land?!

Big thanks to Rebekah and co. for sharing their fabulous family home ? do share the love with a little visit to the One Small Room?and Bowerbird Bazaar?websites. ?Thanks too, to?Jacqui Way?for the stunning shots!

On the Call: Altria Group CEO Marty Barrington

Altria Group Inc., the owner of the biggest U.S. cigarette maker, Philip Morris USA, continues to focus its efforts on building its premium Marlboro brand which has been under pressure from competitors and lower-priced cigarette brands as consumers face economic challenges and unemployment remains high.

The brand sold for an average of $5.79 per pack during the third quarter, compared with an average of $4.24 per pack for the cheapest brand.

Those challenges are in addition to the tax hikes, smoking bans, health concerns and social stigma that have made the cigarette business tougher.

After experiencing one of the biggest U.S. market-share declines in at least four years in the year-ago quarter, the top-selling Marlboro brand gained 1 percentage point of market share in the third quarter to end up with 42.7 percent of the U.S. market. Marlboro's shipment volume increased 1 percent to 28.9 billion cigarettes.

The Richmond, Va., company has introduced several new products with the Marlboro brand, often with lower promotional pricing. They include "special blends" of both menthol and non-menthol cigarettes to try to keep the brand growing and steal smokers from its competitors, who also have fought cigarette sales declines with promotional prices.

Altria recently introduced Marlboro NXT ? a cigarette that can be switched to menthol by crushing a capsule in the filter. At the end of the quarter, Altria said it expanded the brand extension into 27 states. And it says it has a pipeline of innovative products to supplement the Marlboro brand moving forward.

In a conference call with analysts Thursday regarding third-quarter earnings for Altria, CEO Marty Barrington discussed Marlboro's brand architecture.

QUESTION: How does the Marlboro brand architecture play into the ability to maintain and gain market share?

RESPONSE: "The Marlboro architecture is the next evolution really in how that brand, which has grown over time, can continue to grow into the future. ... It actually provides some room for the brand to operate. ... We want to give Marlboro the license, if you will, to reach out to all the smokers who want to be in the franchise. It's a terrific brand, with great equity and great premium pricing, and we believe that the architecture is the next logical step on how to grow that brand over time."

Forecasters warn East Coast about 'Frankenstorm'

(AP) ? All the spare parts appear to be coming together to create what forecasters are calling "Frankenstorm," a monster combination of high wind, heavy rain, extreme tides and maybe snow that could cause havoc along the East Coast just before Halloween next week.

Hurricane Sandy, having blown through Haiti and Cuba on Thursday, continues to barrel north. A wintry storm is chugging across from the West. And frigid air is streaming south from Canada.

And if they meet Tuesday morning around New York or New Jersey, as forecasters predict, they could create a big wet mess that settles over the nation's most heavily populated corridor and reaches as far inland as Ohio.

With experts expecting at least $1 billion in damage, the people who will have to clean it up aren't waiting.

Utilities are lining up out-of-state work crews and canceling employees' days off to deal with the power outages. From county disaster chiefs to the federal government, emergency officials are warning the public to be prepared. And President Barack Obama was briefed aboard Air Force One.

"It's looking like a very serious storm that could be historic," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground. "Mother Nature is not saying 'trick-or-treat.' It's just going to give tricks."

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco, who coined the nickname Frankenstorm, said: "We don't have many modern precedents for what the models are suggesting."

Government forecasters said there is a 90 percent chance ? up from 60 percent two days earlier ? that the East will get pounded starting Sunday and stretching past Halloween on Wednesday. Things are expected to get messier once Sandy, a very late hurricane in what has been a remarkably quiet season, comes ashore, probably in New Jersey.

Coastal areas from Florida to Maine will feel some effects, but the storm is expected to vent the worst of its fury on New Jersey and the New York City area, which could see around 5 inches of rain and gale-force winds close to 40 mph. Eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, western Virginia and the Shenandoah Mountains could get snow.

And the storm will take its time leaving. The weather may not start clearing in the mid-Atlantic until the day after Halloween and Nov. 2 in the upper Northeast, Cisco said.

"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," he said from a NOAA forecast center in College Park, Md. "It's going to be a widespread, serious storm."

It is likely to hit during a full moon, when tides are near their highest, increasing the risk of coastal flooding. And because many trees still have their leaves, they are more likely to topple in the event of wind and snow, meaning there could be widespread power outages lasting to Election Day.

Eastern states that saw blackouts that lasted for days after last year's freak Halloween snowstorm and Hurricane Irene in late August 2011 are already pressuring power companies to be more ready this time.

Asked if he expected utilities to be more prepared, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick responded: "They'd better be."

Jersey Central Power & Light, which was criticized for its response to Irene, notified employees to be ready for extended shifts. In Pennsylvania, PPL Corp. spokesman Michael Wood said, "We're in a much better place this year."

Some have compared the tempest to the so-called Perfect Storm that struck off the coast of New England in 1991, but that one didn't hit as populated an area. Nor is this one like last year's Halloween storm, which was merely an early snowfall.

"The Perfect Storm only did $200 million of damage and I'm thinking a billion," Masters said. "Yeah, it will be worse."

As it made its way across the Caribbean, Sandy was blamed for at least four deaths in Haiti and Jamaica. The 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season hit the Bahamas after cutting across Cuba, where it tore roofs off homes and damaged fragile coffee and tomato crops.

Norje Pupo, a 66-year-old retiree in Holguin, was helping his son clean up early Thursday after an enormous tree toppled in his garden.

"The hurricane really hit us hard," he said. "As you can see, we were very affected. The houses are not poorly made here, but some may have been damaged."

What Can We Do If We Are Buying Earlier Than Expected ...

questions

Q: My wife and I are on a path to purchase a new home in the spring and rent our current home out. However my wife?s grandmother just passed away, and we want to purchase that house now. We have our home already rented out and will not have the down payment for the new house until February (we have some money saved but will have the needed amount then). My wife?s uncle said we can live in the grandmother?s house rent free until we get the mortgage (just have to pay utility bills and basic maintenance), but he wants a solid commitment. What is the best way to give him that? I can get pre-approved now, but that does not guarantee anything. What is my best way to give him a guarantee that we will buy in the early part of next year?
?Wondering, Appleton, WI

A: Check with your lender to see what you have to do to qualify for the home, let the lender know you are related to the seller. Sometimes this makes a difference on your financing. A non-refundable deposit would show your wife?s uncle your are commitment to the property. You will all have to decide on the amount. Then check with the lender to see if this deposit could also go toward your closing costs once you are able to secure a loan.

44 Curious Facts About US Presidents

There have been 43 presidents (with one serving a second term after a lost term) of the United States. Some have been memorable, others forgettable (See the Simpsons? song about mediocre presidents). Each of them has been very human however with all the foibles and eccentricities that entails. Here are some of the strange or lesser known facts about the US Presidents.

4Jm Header Sm

1. George Washington ? Thinking that shaking hands was beneath the dignity of the President, Washington preferred to bow to greet guests. To avoid being forced into a handshake he would place one hand on his sword and hold his hat in the other.

2. John Adams ? Adams, the second President, and Jefferson, the third, both died on the same day, July 4th 1826, exactly fifty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Adam?s last words, probably apocryphal, are said to be ?Jefferson survives,? when in fact Jefferson had died hours earlier.

3. Thomas Jefferson ? While a famous writer, the chief composer of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson hated public speaking and avoided giving speeches. Jefferson started the tradition of delivering written State of the Union statements, which lasted until the 20th century.

4. James Madison ? Madison was the slightest President. Standing at five feet four inches and weighing less than 100lbs you would need three-and-a-half Madisons to make up a Taft, the heaviest President.

7Aj Header Sm

5. James Monroe ? In his re-election, Monroe ran unopposed for the Presidency. He failed to receive all the votes in the electoral college however when a rogue member cast his ballot for John Quincy Adams.

6. John Quincy Adams ? Adams was fond of swimming naked in the Potomac. When an intrepid female reporter wished to get an interview with the President she stole his clothes until he agreed to an interview.

7. Andrew Jackson ? Jackson was a noted duelist. When a man impugned Jackson?s wife they dueled. The man shot Jackson over the heart. Jackson cooly took aim and killed the man. It was too risky to remove the bullet and so it remained in Jackson for the rest of his life.

8. Martin Van Buren ? Van Buren?s first language was not English, he was raised speaking Dutch.

12Zt Header Sm-1

9. William Henry Harrison ? Delivered the longest inaugural address and had the shortest Presidency. His long speech in bad weather led to him developing a cold which worsened and caused his death after a month in office.

10. John Tyler ? Tyler was the first Vice-President to assume office after the death of a President in office. He had the most children of any President, 15.

11. James Polk ? Polk was elected on a promise not to run for a second term in office.

12. Zachary Taylor ? Died from contracting cholera from a bowl of cherries washed down with iced milk.

15Jp Header Sm

13. Millard Fillmore ? Fillmore refused an honorary degree from the University of Oxford on the basis that he was not classically educated and so could not read the diploma, written in Latin. He said ?no man should accept a degree he cannot read.?

14. Franklin Pierce ? While President, Pierce was arrested for running over an old woman with his horse.

15. James Buchanan ? Often rated the worst President when historians are polled. His Presidency included the secession of seven states and a major depression. Some historians believe that Buchanan was the first gay US President, he was certainly the only one to be unwed for the duration of his term of office.

16. Abraham Lincoln ? Lincoln was a notably ugly man in photos but people who met him described his face as intelligent and handsome in motion. The first President to wear a beard he grew it at the suggestion of a young girl, Grace Bedell, who wrote to him.

19Rb Header Sm

17. Andrew Johnson ? Was drunk at Lincoln?s second inauguration. The event was described by a senator as follows. ?The inauguration went off very well except that the Vice President Elect was too drunk to perform his duties & disgraced himself & the Senate by making a drunken foolish speech. I was never so mortified in my life, had I been able to find a hole I would have dropped through it out of sight.?

18. Ulysses S. Grant ? Gained a reputation for drinking heavily while still a young man. When President Lincoln was warned about Grant?s drinking habits during the civil war he is supposed to have responded ?If it makes fighting men like Grant, then find out what he drinks, and send my other commanders a case!?

19. Rutherford Hayes ? The only President to be elected via a special congressional committee which ruled on various ballots contested during the election. His election is still contested by historians.

20. James Garfield ? Could write Latin with his left hand whilst simultaneously writing Greek with his right.

23Bh Header Sm

21. Chester A. Arthur ? Sold off all the furniture in the White House before moving in. Lots of it dated back to the construction of the White House and any such pieces would be hugely valuable today.

22. Grover Cleveland ? As well as being the only President to serve two non-consecutive terms Cleveland was a fan of the telephone and would personally answer the White House phone.

23. Benjamin Harrison ? While in office Harrison had electricity installed in the White House. Unfortunately he and his wife were terrified of it and would not touch switches for fear of electrocution and often slept with the lights on.

24. Grover Cleveland ? The First Democrat elected after the Civil War, Grover Cleveland was the only President to leave the White House and return for a second term four years later.

25Wm Header Sm

25. William McKinley ? McKinley was the first president to appear on motion picture. It can be viewed on youtube here.

26. Theodore Roosevelt ? Theodore Roosevelt was the first American to win a Nobel Prize, the first President to leave the country while in office, and the first to fly in an airplane.

27. William Howard Taft ? Taft is best known for being the fattest President but he also holds a sporting title. He was the first President to cast the opening pitch of a baseball season.

28. Woodrow Wilson ? Wilson was the best educated President, the only one to hold a PhD, and yet he did not learn to read until he was eleven.

29Wh Header

29. Warren Harding ? Was so fond of cards that his cabinet was known as the ?Poker Cabinet? because they all played together. At his poker parties alcohol, illegal during prohibition, would flow freely.

30. Calvin Coolidge ? Coolidge was a man of very few words and so became known as Silent Cal. He was so taciturn that when Dorothy Parker was told he had died she replied ?How could they tell??

31. Herbert Hoover ? Hoover and his wife spoke fluent Mandarin Chinese. When they did not wish to be overheard they would speak Mandarin.

32. Franklin Delano Roosevelt ? FDR?s wife was also a Roosevelt and so did not have to change her name on marriage. At their wedding the bride was given away by President Theodore Roosevelt.

35Jk Header

33. Harry S. Truman ? Like the ?S? in Ulysses Grant?s name the S in Truman?s name meant nothing. It was only ever an S as a way of mollifying both grandfathers whose names began with S.

34. Dwight Eisenhower ? Eisenhower installed the putting green at the White House. When squirrels were ruining the grass he had them removed from the gardens.

35. John F. Kennedy ? When his ship was sunk in World War II, Kennedy swam 3.5 miles pulling a wounded crewman by a strap held in his teeth.

36. Lyndon Johnson ? Johnson loved the drink Fresca so much that he had a fountain of it installed in the White House.

38Gf Header Sm

37. Richard Nixon ? Nixon so enjoyed bowling that he had the White House pool replaced with a bowling lane.

38. Gerald Ford ? Ford was the only President never elected to either the Presidency or the Vice-Presidency, he was appointed by Richard Nixon as his Vice-President and assumed the Presidency after Nixon?s resignation.

39. Jimmy Carter ? As a young man, Carter shot his sister with a BB gun in retaliation for her throwing a wrench at him.

40. Ronald Reagan ? The blueberry flavor Jelly Belly bean was created for Reagan?s inauguration since he was a great fan of the sweets. A portrait of the President made of jelly beans hangs in his library.

44Bo Header Sm

41. George H. W. Bush ? While visiting Japan, Bush vomited at a banquet hosted by the Japanese prime minister. The event coined a new Japanese phrase ?Bushusuru,? literally ?to do the Bush-thing.?

42. Bill Clinton ? While in high school Clinton was a member of a jazz quartet who played in dark glasses. They called themselves the Three Blind Mice.

43. George W. Bush ? Bush is the President with both the highest and lowest recorded approval ratings. They peaked after 9/11 and slumped after hurricane Katrina.

44. Barack Obama ? President Obama is a well-known nerd who collects comic books. When Nichelle Nichols, Uhura from Star Trek, visited the White House Obama made the Vulcan salute in greeting.

Review of Mr Yipadee, The Animal Choir (CD)

?

It?s so important to set an example for our children of seeing the cup (at least) half full, and that the words they speak and think create their reality. There is very little on the market which encourages children to believe in themselves.

?

This CD for children will kick start anyone's day with joy, fun, purpose and a 'can do' attitude. And I'm proud to say the creator is a Mother magazine subscriber. Do 'like' them on Facebook and visit their website. I've written a very glowing review of this CD in the upcoming issue of The Mother.? www.yipadee.com ?(The prices are in American dollars, though they're UK based.)

?

?

I would have loved something like this when my girls were small. It?s the sort of CD that would brighten any car journey, long or short, and is such a wonderful kick-start to the day.

?

Mr Yipadee inspires joy & self-confidence in children through fun and catchy music & stories. It is based on the Law Of Attraction, NLP, & self-help tools, and helps a child to retain his or her natural instincts of happiness, health, and excitement about the world. Millions of adults around the world use personal development techniques. This CD offers the same for children.

3 Keys to a Strong RelationshipAll strong relationships have three things in common, according to Meredith Hansen, Psy.D, a psychologist and relationship expert: trust, commitment and vulnerability.

?Trust allows a couple to know that their partner is there for them, truly cares about them, is coming from a good place, and supports them,? she said.

It means keeping your word and putting your relationship first, especially when you?re confronting a decision that might compromise it, she said.

A minor example of following through is calling your spouse to tell them you?re safe if they worry when you?re running late, she said. And it means ?demonstrating good character,? she said.

Commitment means ?We?re in this together no matter what,? Hansen said. As a couple, you work on finding a solution, not walking away, she said. Building a commitment also happens on your end. Hansen suggested engaging in activities that connect you to your commitment every day.

For instance, have a playlist in the car that reminds you of your partner and schedule regular date nights, she said. If you?re married, have a playlist that reminds you of your wedding, frame your vows to remind you of your promises, discuss your growth as a couple on anniversaries, watch your wedding video and look through your photos, she said.

?Vulnerability is all about taking the risk to be your real, genuine self [with your partner],? Hansen said. For instance, being vulnerable includes sharing your feelings, not your thoughts, she said. Instead of saying ?I feel like you did this on purpose? or ?It seems you don?t love me anymore,? you explain, ?I feel hurt, disappointed, worried or scared,? she said.

?Vulnerability requires trust and safety in the relationship, but if you can truly make the effort to reveal your softer side, then you?ll continue [to] grow closer as a couple,? Hansen said.

What Doesn?t Work

People think that strong relationships require communication training, Hansen said. While communication is important, it?s not much help if your trust is shattered, a partner is emotionally distant or a partner is unsure about staying in the relationship, she said.

Communication actually naturally improves, according to Hansen, after couples start reconnecting and stop defending themselves. In fact, her first goal with couples clients is to help them strengthen their connection and feel emotionally safe, she said.

Nurturing Your Bond Daily

Relationships require ?small amounts of effort every day to nurture the bond between the two of you,? Hansen said. For instance, she suggested a variety of ways to strengthen your bond, including: kissing daily; sending sweet text messages; unplugging during dinnertime; walking together, touching often; listening often; asking your partner about their big meeting, their happiness, goals and dreams; making love; making eye contact; sharing your feelings and putting your partner first.

It?s also important to be able to pay attention and acknowledge the effect your fears and insecurities have on your relationship, she said.

?Remember that relationship satisfaction will continually ebb and flow, but if you practice coming back to your ?why? ? why am I in this relationship, why does this relationship matter to me ? you?ll easily get back on track,? Hansen said.
