How To Incorporate Article Writing Skills Into Your Website

In other words, you?re doing yourself a huge disservice if you don?t pick up and use some basic marketing and journalistic techniques in your writing. This article will show you just a few starters to get you going.

Punchy headlines

One of the best things about English is that you don?t always need to say everything to get your message across. You can deliberately be vague in your headlines and article titles in order to get your reader asking questions right away. The purpose of the headline is to challenge the reader in some way and compel them to keep reading. When you?re going to make a website, you should think about how you can drop words in your titles to make them more zesty. ?4000 People Protested In Front of the City Hall Today? is not really the best headline that you can use. It should be simplified to ?4000 Protested Today at City Hall? or even just ?4000 Protest at City Hall Today?.

Another type of challenging headline is the one where it is ambiguous. Sometimes this is deliberate, sometimes this is unintentional. Avoid the latter and go for the former. For example, you might want to deliberately be ambiguous to make your reader keep going because they want to find out what you meant by the headline. ?Astronaut Takes Blame for Gas in Spacecraft? is a funny headline and we all know what the author of the article really meant, but we?re already friendly to the article now and will probably at least read the first paragraph.

Good English

When you?re going to make a website, using good English will be the key to a good readership and a long-term blogging career. If you?re not 100% confident in your abilities at writing, then get someone to proofread what you?ve written before it goes online.

There are many hundreds of potential grammar tips that you can employ in your writing and you?d probably do yourself a huge favor by getting your hands on a recent and fun (yes, grammar can be fun!) book that shows you neat little tips and tricks you can use in your writing.

The basic trick to blogging successfully though is to use familiar words and concepts. Words and concepts that are familiar to your readers and to the field your writing about are the key to writing a blog that is memorable.

Write in an active voice, use synonyms and also use an informal or casual tone unless the blog is about a serious topic and calls for formal English. One of the biggest tricks to writing informal and punchy text is to learn how to drop the subject in your writing. We do this when we speak anyway, as it is often very obvious who the subject is. For example, if you?re blogging about your recent trip to go skiing at Mt. Cook in New Zealand, then everyone knows that you?re writing the article about your experience, so there?s absolutely no point to using the word ?I? in your blog post about your trip. ?Went skiing at Mt. Cook this morning.? is far better than ?I went skiing at Mt. Cook this morning.? It?s also familiar and easier to read for most people because that?s the type of language they use when they are texting, Tweeting or instant messaging.

There are many more tricks that you can use with grammar apart from these basic ones when you make a website.

Style and audience

Any article writer will tell you that the style of your article will largely be determined by your audience. An article that uses jargon such as ?tacking?, ?aft?, ?stern? and ?daggerboard? will be unintelligible to more than half of the general population but would not even cause any avid sailors to bat an eyelid. Thus, the key to writing a good article is to know your audience.

If you?re just starting out your blog then of course you have a lot more freedom with this as you?re basically setting out to create your own turf. But this is where observing and reading other blogs on similar topics will also help you.

NFL gives guidance to its music hopefuls (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]AP - Even before Darren Howard entered the NFL, the defensive end had dreams of being in the music business. He was a DJ in high school and by the time he was in college, he'd created a "rag-tag" recording studio in the basement of his residence.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Just past the security gate for the world's largest cell phone trade show in Barcelona, executives of big mobile carriers can't avoid walking past a booth they would probably rather not see: It's for "Pinger," a small California company that offers free texting in the United States and Germany and has global expansion plans.

Pinger and an explosion of smartphone messaging services ? like iMessage, BlackBerry Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber Media, Facebook Messenger and KakaoTalk ? have managed in just a few years to slash away at the important revenue that cell phone companies get from text messaging. Analysts say there's no end in sight to the financial blood letting.

The messaging services do it by offering applications that let phone users chat for free on the carriers' data networks or Wi-Fi. Some, like Pinger, make money from advertisements and work on computers as well.

The London-based Ovum research firm estimates telecommunications companies lost nearly $14 billion last year in text-messaging revenue as consumers migrated to applications allowing them to send messages over cell phone data networks.

Ovum said the companies still took in an estimated $153 billion, but that was down 9 percent from a year earlier, and Pinger co-founder Joe Stipher wants to reduce the amount even more.

"Text messaging is free, and calling is going to be free," said Stipher, wearing jeans in contrast to the dark suits favored by thousands of cell phone company executives attending the four-day 2012 Mobile World Congress that ended Thursday. "Data is going to be like electricity or water, not totally free, but do you worry about giving someone a glass of water at your home or letting them plug in? No."

Needless to say, mobile companies are not happy at the flood of free messaging services piggybacking their networks. Telecom Italia SpA chief executive Franco Bernabe told MWC that free messaging services are undercutting the ability of phone companies to invest in their networks. Paid texting, or SMS, has been a cash cow for phone companies that uses minimal network capacity.

The new "players have based their innovation in the mobile domain, without a deep understanding of the complex technical environment of our industry. This is increasingly creating significant problems to the overall service offered to the end user and driving additional investments for mobile operators," Bernabe said.

After years of study, the big telecommunications operators announced this week that they will try to fight back by introducing software this year embedded in new cell phones that will allow users to do the same sort of Internet-based messaging and voice calls that consumers want without paying separate fees.

The new messaging method introduced by the industry group GSMA, or Groupe Speciale Mobile Association, is dubbed "Joyn" and will be launched this year by operators in France, Germany, Italy and South Korea. A test "beta" version was released this week to Spanish clients of Vodafone Group PLC who have smartphones running on Google's Android software.

In industry parlance, the application is known as "Rich Communications Suite," or RCS.

Joyn tries to deal with one major shortcoming of the messaging apps ? both the sender and the recipient have to have the same app. But it's not clear if RCS will work on every phone. Apple Inc., for example, has a long history of not playing by mobile company rules.

"Since Rich Communications (Suite) will be fully integrated in devices, there is no need for our customers to download or install anything," said Rene Obermann, chief executive of Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG. "Ease of use is thus ensured and it will just work. We are looking forward to offer new services like text chat, file and live video sharing during a call to our customers soon."

But analysts say there's no way of knowing whether consumers will migrate to Joyn until after it is released in a full launch to consumers, and note that the last major technological advance by mobile operators came in the 1990s, when text messaging was launched. And cell phones issued by mobile carriers often come loaded with software that many people rarely or never use because they don't like them.

"It is possible this will be their last chance to see if they can play more of a role," said Pamela Clark-Dickson, an analyst at London's Informa Telecoms & Media research group. "The user experience is key, and if they don't get it right people won't use it."

The GSMA didn't say how operators will charge for Joyn ? and how much. The carriers face an uphill battle denting the popularity of the free messaging services. WhatsApp chief executive officer Jan Koum told the mobile congress that its users are now sending more than 2 billion messages per day, up from 1 billion in October. The much smaller Pinger saw its users send 2 billion messages in January, up from 1.7 billion in December, Sipher said.

And he says the mobile operators should stay away from free messaging because "they aren't good at it and haven't done applications."

"The carriers should be smart, reliable pipes" providing Internet data access like utilities give reliable water and electricity, he said. "They need to focus on being good network operators."

Obermann said carriers are at a crucial point at which they must "develop our own, innovative product suites" through cooperation with the smaller messaging companies.

"The smart pipe will be one of the areas where (telecommunications companies) will show their innovation," he said.

His company's venture capital division, T-Venture, took a stake in Pinger last week just before the MWC conference began, announcing it would provide $7.5 million in venture capital to help Pinger grow internationally, especially in Europe.

For Sipher, it's a sign that some operators realize they need to work with messaging startups instead of against them.

"We're saying to the telecoms that we're here, we're big, and we're playing," Sipher said. "When's the last time a carrier introduced a successful application? That would be SMS and that's almost 15 years ago."

Study Suggests 1 Minute Workouts are Good for Health - TheCheckup

Thinkstock

Between work, family and school, it can be a struggle to get to the gym. While the U.S. Surgeon General recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, researchers in Canada say you don?t need to sacrifice a half-hour to stay healthy.

A study conducted at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario finds that regular sessions of one-minute bursts of exercise can achieve the same benefits as longer fitness routines.

Scientists compared maximum power peaks and heart rates of two groups of male and female volunteers. Participants in the first group were middle-aged and of average health but inactive. The second group, made up of middle-aged participants as well, had a history of cardiovascular disease. Both groups began a cycling interval program where they repeated one-minute bursts of intense activity, alternating with one-minute periods of rest, for 20 minutes at a time.

Weeks later, both groups experienced significant improvements in their health and fitness. In addition, the patients with cardiovascular disease exhibited improvements in blood vessel and heart function according to Martin Gibala, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster.

A small follow-up experiment was conducted to confirm the study?s results. Volunteers who had been diagnosed with full-blown Type 2 diabetes were asked to try the 1-minute hard, 1-minute easy interval training. Researchers discovered that even a single session, repeated 10 times, improved blood sugar regulation in the subjects, especially after meals.

Yet still, Gibala says, you should still aim for the average 30-minute or longer endurance training if you have the time.

One-Minute Workouts You Should Try

  • Arm circles: Start by making small circular motions with both arms on either side. After a few repetitions of small circles, enlarge your circles and do the same number of reps. Arm circles gives your shoulders a huge workout.
  • Chair squats: Stand up just as you?re about to sit in your chair. Chair squats works the butt muscles (glutes), hips and thighs.
  • Lunges: Slowly step backward with one leg in the lunge position, bending both knees and lowering your hips so that the forward thigh is parallel with the floor. The front knee should be vertically above the foot and ankle. Return to the start position. Lunges works the core, hips and legs.
  • Plank: Lie on your stomach with your palms on the floor. Keep your elbows close to your sides and hands directly under your shoulders. Lift into pushup position, keeping torso and legs stiff. Hold for one minute. Planking works the abdomen.
  • Stairs: Walk up and down the stairs. It works your glutes.

Guardian of the Redeemer ?

St. Joseph is one of the few saints to have more than one feast day. He also happens to be my patron saint, so when Maureen and I were getting married, she asked which feast day I celebrated. Before I had the chance to answer, she mused out loud, ?Definitely not St. Joseph the Worker.? She was right (I celebrate March 19th as my feast day), though I?ve teased her ever since about this apparent commentary on my work habits!

The Church?has traditionally honored St. Joseph during the month of March, so it seems appropriate to begin the month?by drawing some insights from this great saint.

While St. Joseph wasn?t a priest in the usual sense, this ?just man? has much to say in response to today?s crisis of fatherhood?both the spiritual fatherhood of priests and the fatherhood exercised in the home, which the Catechism calls a ?domestic Church,? a community of grace and prayer.

St. Joseph was entrusted with the care of the Holy Family, the sanctuary of love where Jesus spent His hidden years. This family was not only a domestic Church but also, in embryonic form, the Universal Church, the Family of God, containing both Christ the Head as well as the mother of the ?Body??all who would come to believe in Christ and keep His commandments (cf. Rev. 12:17). For this reason, St. Joseph, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, is called the patron of the Universal Church.

I suspect that many modern men think St. Joseph got it all wrong. After all, this is the age of Viagra, no-fault divorce, and the ?sexual revolution.? The goal seemingly is sex without responsibility, and here St. Joseph accepts the serious responsibility of marriage and family while foregoing the pleasure of marital intimacy.

Yet, St. Joseph got it exactly right. He is a vitally important witness to modern man that it is possible and necessary?in fact, noble and manly?to live in accordance with the Church?s teachings on sexual morality. Certainly this does not mean that all men, particularly married men, are called to perpetual continence. But all men according to their state in life are called to chastity and at certain times in their lives (e.g., before marriage and possibly at times during marriage) are called to continence.

The marital act is a sacred expression of one?s total gift to one?s spouse and must not degenerate into a merely recreational, selfish act of self-gratification. St. Joseph gives himself totally to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He embodies true love and marital fidelity to his beloved spouse even in the absence of physical intimacy.

Priests act in the person of Christ. Our Blessed Lord is the bridegroom, the Church is His bride. In a very real sense, then, priests are wedded to the Church (cf. Eph. 5:32). Their chaste, faithful betrothal to the Family of God?and their fidelity to the teachings of the Church?renders their priesthood life-giving and fruitful.

The title I most frequently associate with St. Joseph is ?Guardian of the Redeemer.? This is at least partially the result of Pope John Paul II?s 1989 apostolic exhortation that bears that name.

A significant element of fatherhood is playing good defense?in other words, protecting the precious treasures that have been entrusted to us. Wolves in many forms pose serious threats to families. Our response as men of faith must not be fear or anxiety in the face of such threats, but rather vigilance and courage. This holds true, too, for priests and bishops with respect to the treasures of our faith. As St. Paul exhorts St. Timothy, ?O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you? (1 Tim. 6:20).

During this month devoted to the Guardian of the Redeemer, may all of us fathers draw renewed strength from this holy hero. St. Joseph, patron of the universal Church, pray for us!
