APNewsBreak: MLB avg salary up 2.7 pct to $3.1M

By RONALD BLUM

updated 9:01 p.m. ET Dec. 5, 2011

DALLAS - The average major league salary increased 2.7 percent this year to nearly $3.1 million, the largest rise since 2008.

The 913 players on Aug. 31 rosters and disabled lists averaged $3,095,183, the Major League Baseball Players Association said Monday in its annual report, up from $3,014,572 last year when the average topped $3 million for the first time.

The average figures to go up next year, with the minimum salary rising from $414,000 to $480,000 under the new labor contract.

The New York Yankees had the highest average salary for the 13th consecutive season, but at $6.54 million it declined for the second straight year, down from a peak of $7.66 million when they won the World Series in 2009.

Philadelphia was second at $6.44 million, followed by Boston ($5.21 million), the Los Angeles Angels ($4.58 million) and the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals ($4.47 million). AL champion Texas was 15th at $3.01 million.

Among other playoff teams, Detroit was ninth at $3.96 million, Milwaukee 11th at $3.41 million, Arizona 22nd at $2.12 million and Tampa Bay 28th at $1.54 million. Commissioner Bud Selig has pointed out several times that changes to baseball's labor contract in recent years have increased competitive balance.

Kansas City was last at $1.34 million, just behind San Diego at $1.35 million. Pittsburgh, which was last in 2010, rose to 27th at $1.73 million.

Among regulars at positions, designated hitters took over as the highest average at $9.3 million, followed by first basemen at $8.9 million. With the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez spending time on the disabled list and failing to play 100 games at third base, that position's average dropped from $6.5 million to $5.2 million.

Outfielders were at $5.6 million, second basemen $5.2 million, starting pitchers $4.9 million, shortstops $3.9 million, catchers $2.6 million and relief pitchers $1.9 million.

The commissioner's office will not determine its final figures for a few weeks. Management's numbers usually differ slightly because of different methods of calculation.

Herman Cain Suspends Presidential Campaign

In the wake of both sexual harassment and infidelity allegations, Republication Presidential nominee Herman Cain suspended his campaign this afternoon, effectively ending his bid for the White House in 2012.

"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign," Cain said at an Atlanta rally, vowing that "I am not going to be silenced and I am not going away."

Cain cited the "continued distraction" of chatter over Ginger White's claim that she carried on a 13-year affair - during which Cain supposedly showered her with gifts and financial help - with the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza as the basis for his decision.

"These false and untrue allegations continue to be spinned in the media, and in the court of public opinion so as to create a cloud of doubt over me and this campaign and my family," Cain said. "That spin hurts. It hurts my wife. It hurts my family. It hurts me. And it hurts the American people, because you are being denied solutions to our problems."

Even before White rose to national prominence, Cain was under pressure after several other women accused him of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct in the 1990s when he was the head of the National Restaurant Association.

"One of declarations I want to make to you today is that I am at peace with my God. I am at peace with my wife, and she is at peace with me. And I am at peace with my family and at peace with myself," Cain said.

Clinton offers Myanmar first rewards for political (Reuters)

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (Reuters) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton offered Myanmar the first rewards for reform on Thursday, saying the United States would back more aid for the reclusive country and consider returning an ambassador after an absence of some two decades.

Clinton said she had "candid, productive" conversations with President Thein Sein and other Myanmar ministers, and told them Washington stood ready to support further reforms as the country seeks to emerge from decades of authoritarian military rule.

But she also urged Myanmar to take further steps to release political prisoners and end ethnic conflicts, and said better U.S. ties would be impossible unless Myanmar halts its illicit dealings with North Korea, which has repeatedly set alarm bells ringing across Asia with its renegade nuclear program.

"The president told me he hopes to build on these steps, and I assured him that these reforms have our support," Clinton said in prepared remarks to a news conference after her talks in Myanmar's remote capital, Naypyitaw.

"I also made clear that, while the measures already taken may be unprecedented and welcomed, they are just the beginning."

Clinton's landmark visit to the country also known as Burma marks a tentative rapprochement after more than 50 years of estrangement from the West. She will travel on Thursday to the commercial capital of Yangon, where she will hold the first of two meetings with veteran pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

INCREMENTAL CHANGES

Following meetings with Thein Sein and other officials in Naypyitaw, Clinton unveiled several incremental steps to improve ties and said the United States would consider returning an ambassador to the country.

The United States downgraded its representation in Myanmar to a charge d'affaires in response to the military's brutal 1988 crackdown on pro-democracy protests and voiding of 1990 elections widely judged to have been won by Suu Kyi's party.

"This could become an important channel to air concerns, monitor and support progress, and build trust," Clinton said. "These are incremental steps, and we are prepared to go further if reforms maintain momentum."

Clinton said the United States would support new World Bank and International Monetary Fund assessment missions to help Myanmar jumpstart its feeble economy and new U.N. counter-narcotics and health cooperation programs.

Seeking to pull Myanmar more closely into a region increasingly united by its wariness over regional heavyweight China, Clinton invited Myanmar to become an observer to the Lower Mekong Initiative, a U.S.-backed regional grouping aimed at discussing the future of Southeast Asia's major waterway.

Clinton also said the two countries would discuss a joint effort to recover the remains of Americans killed during the building of the "Burma Road" during World War Two -- echoing steps taken successfully with Vietnam as Washington and Hanoi sought to put their differences behind them.

Rights groups and some lawmakers in the U.S. Congress have been concerned that Washington may be moving too swiftly to endorse the new leadership, and Clinton made clear that the United States needed to see more progress before it could consider major steps such as ending economic sanctions which have squeezed Myanmar's economy and pushed it closer to China.

"It is encouraging that political prisoners have been released, but over 1,000 are still not free," Clinton said.

"Let me say publicly what I said privately earlier today: no person in any country should be detained for exercising universal freedoms of expression, assembly and conscience."

A U.S. official who sat in on the talks said Thein Sein had said that the government considered the release of such prisoners "part of the effort of having an inclusive political process" and it was looking at the possibility of more releases.

Clinton also said it would "be difficult to begin a new chapter" until Myanmar begins forging peace with ethnic minority rebels and starts allowing humanitarian groups, human rights monitors and journalists into conflict areas.

Underscoring a key U.S. diplomatic objective, Clinton pressed Myanmar to halt what U.S. officials say are illicit contacts with North Korea, including trade in missile technology, and to honor U.N. sanctions imposed on Pyongyang because of its renegade nuclear program.

"I was frank that better relations with the United States will only be possible if the entire government respects the international consensus against the spread of nuclear weapons," she said. "We look to Naypyitaw to honour U.N. Security Council Resolutions 1718 and 1874 and sever illicit ties with North Korea."

The U.S. official who sat in on the talks said Thein Sein had expressed "strong reassurances" on commitment to upholding U.N. Security Council resolutions.

The official cited Thein Sein as saying Myanmar was strongly considering signing the International Atomic Energy Agency additional protocol which would allow more latitude for inspections. U.S. officials have played down fear Myanmar's ties with North Korea had broadened to include a nuclear program.

SUU KYI BACKS U.S. ENGAGEMENT

Suu Kyi said on Wednesday she fully backed Washington's effort to gauge Myanmar's reforms since the military nominally gave up power to civilian leaders following elections last year.

"I think we have to be prepared to take risk. Nothing is guaranteed," Suu Kyi told reporters in Washington in a public video call from her home in Yangon, where she was held in detention for 15 of the last 21 years before being released in November last year.

But Suu Kyi -- a Nobel peace laureate and towering figure for Myanmar's embattled democracy movement -- said the United States must remain watchful that the army-backed government did not halt or roll back reforms, and "speak out loud and clear" if people engaging in politics were arrested.

Suu Kyi confirmed she would run in upcoming by-elections, ending a boycott of Myanmar's political system.

Clinton's visit was reported on page two of the main state-run New Light of Mynamar newspaper, with a photograph of her arrival and two paragraphs on who accompanied her and met her at the airport.

Its front page focused on the prime minister of Belarus, who is also visiting in coming days, and preparations for a regional economic cooperation meeting.

Congressional Candidate (Maybe) Saved Flight from Unruly Passenger (The Atlantic Wire)

A candidate for Congress in Illinois reportedly subdued an enraged passenger on a domestic flight yesterday, and though his Republican competitors question his account of events, randomly-also-on-the-flight MSNBC host Chris Matthews confirmed the incident. The candidate, John Tree, is a colonel in the Air Force reserves. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Tree's campaign?said in a press release that the candidate was "asked by a flight attendant sometime after takeoff to move from his coach seat to first class in order to stand between her and a passenger who had been extremely verbally abusive to flight personnel and other passengers ...?Tree, with the help of a number of other passengers in the first class cabin, subdued the passenger and returned him to his seat. Tree sat next to the passenger for the remainder of the flight to prevent further disturbances." So he saved the day! But wait. National Journal's Matt ?Vasilogambros reports that state Republican party has issued a release citing an anonymous Congressional staffer who was also on the plane and contests Tree's version of events. "The release goes on to ask why the plane was not diverted and why the passenger in question was not handcuffed," Vasiliogambros reports. Shucks, so he may have embellished the story for political gain, then. But wait (again)! MSNBC host Chris Matthews, who was also on this apparently politically star-studded flight from Chicago to D.C.m emailed the Chicago Sun-Times to confirm Tree's heroic story. As a side note, if anyone would like to option this film, tentatively titled Politicos on a Plane, we are available to write the screenplay.

How Apple Is Burying Its Scrooge Image [Apple]

There is pain and turmoil in Steve Jobs's death, but for the departed tech executive's company Apple, real opportunity, too. That's why, near the height of the holiday shopping season, Apple is giving precious space on its homepage and in its stores to a charity promotion. It's the sort of philanthropic gesture Jobs made a point of avoiding. More »

Competing Explanations Proposed for Strange Christmas Space Explosion (SPACE.com)

The Christmas sky last year was lit up by an extraordinarily powerful and mysteriously long-lasting explosion in space that scientists now suggest was a comet smacking into a dense star or a peculiar supernova death.

Radiation from gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions ever seen in the universe, strikes Earth's atmosphere from random directions in space about twice a day. These bursts can be roughly divided into two kinds, ones lasting less than two seconds, and ones lasting up to minutes.

However, the strange gamma-ray burst detected on Christmas Day 2010 by NASA's Swift satellite lasted at least half an hour.

Scientists think shorter gamma-ray bursts are generally caused by merging neutron stars ? dead stars made up of super-dense neutron matter. Longer bursts are typically thought to originate from hypernovas, in which giant stars that explode as incredibly powerful supernovas spew two opposing jets of energy as they die; we see them head-on as bursts. ?[Photos of Great Supernova Explosions]

However, researchers suspect a number of mysterious events of completely different origins could mimic gamma-ray bursts. Such might be the case with the Christmas burst, formally known as GRB 101225A.

"It is important to understand gamma-ray bursts to get some global picture of the life and death of massive stars," said astronomer Christina Th?ne of the Institute of Astrophysics in Andalusia, Spain. "Massive stars are ultimately the ones that decide what elements are present, created and recycled in the gas in our and any other galaxy."

Now scientists have two competing explanations for the Christmas burst: a cosmic impact on a dead star in our galaxy, or a peculiar supernova in a distant galaxy.

Based on the length and brightness of the burst, astrophysicist Sergio Campana at the Astronomical Observatory of Brera in Italy and his colleagues suggest that a minor body such as a comet or asteroid crashed into a neutron star.

"I think this is the discovery of a completely new astrophysical phenomenon that has not been envisaged before," Campana told SPACE.com.

Specifically, the astrophysicists suggest that the gravity of a neutron star ripped apart a 500 trillion-metric-ton chunk of matter that had been passing within 3,000 miles (5,000 kilometers) of it. The debris fell onto the star and exploded as energy.

"If tidal disruption of minor bodies around neutron stars is really happening, I would expect GRB 101225A not [to] be unique," Campana said. "I would like to start searching for this kind of event either in existing data sets or with new observations."

On the other hand, Th?ne and her colleagues say an oddball supernova might be to blame. They propose that the Christmas explosion occurred when a neutron star combined with a helium star, a type of super-giant star rich in helium. When the neutron star and the helium star's core merged, the result would have been a black hole or a highly magnetic neutron star known as a magnetar, either of which might power long bursts of radiation. The helium star would have shed its outer layers first, surrounding the duo in an envelope of gas ? which could explain unusual details seen in the burst's light.

To test which explanation might be correct, scientists must figure out if the explosion took place in our galaxy or not. Th?ne and her colleagues observed signs that it took place in a distant galaxy, but the evidence is ambiguous, they noted. Further observations with the Hubble Space Telescope and other observatories could help solve the mystery.

"We hope to settle the question on the right model sometime in the future," Th?ne said. "Hopefully sometime next year we will know more."

The scientists detailed their findings in two papers published in the Dec. 1 issue of the journal Nature.
