Iran says to keep Hormuz open as long as it serves its interests

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will keep the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane open as long as the waterway served its interests, a military commander was on Monday quoted as saying.

Iranian politicians and officials have often said that Iran could block the strait - the neck of the Gulf through which 40 percent of the world's seaborne oil exports passes - in response to sanctions or military action.

Such a move would risk a military response from the United States and Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told Reuters in July that Iran was unlikely to follow through on the threat unless its own vessels were denied use of the strait.

"Iran's goal is for everyone in the world to use the Strait of Hormuz but as long as it does not harm Iran's interests and in that case our reaction would definitely be different," IRNA news agency quoted senior Revolutionary Guards commander Masoud Jazayeri as telling Iran's Arabic-language Al Alam television.

"Most military experts know that if Iran decides to close the Strait of Hormuz, no country or countries would be able to confront this move," he added, according to IRNA.

Experts say that a heavy Western naval presence in the Gulf and surrounding area is a big impediment to any attempt to block the waterway.

Israel and the United States have threatened military action against Iran unless it abandons nuclear activities which the West suspects are intended to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

Lice are parasites that can infest both humans and dogs. The lice that afflicts humans though is different from the lice that thrives on the dog?s body thus the infestation of the pet cannot be blamed on the lice the commonly infests the toddler as human lice cannot live on dogs and vice versa.

The kind that infest dogs are wingless parasites that can be tan, beige or gray in color and has the size of about 1/12 of an inch. Excessive scratching is one of the signs of lice infestation. Lice can be seen attached to the skin of the dog especially on the neck and shoulders, on the anus and on the ears. The nits or the eggs of lice can be easily noticed but they are hard to remove as they are attached to hair follicles by a glue-like substance.

Lice infestation is easy to resolve with insecticides. Adult lice are eliminated by bathing the dog with insecticide shampoo. The treatment must be repeated several times as the insecticides would have no effect on the eggs. To totally eradicate the infestation, the beddings and the toys of the dog must be washed thoroughly to make sure that the parasites are killed.

Cheney calls Palin's selection as 2008 US VP candidate "a mistake"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Vice President Dick Cheney said in remarks aired on Sunday that 2008 Republican presidential candidate John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate was "a mistake" because of her inexperience.

Cheney said in an interview with ABC News that the main criterion for anyone being considered as a potential future vice president "has to be: Is this person capable of being the president of the United States."

Cheney, a prominent conservative who remains an influential figure in Republican circles, said he personally likes Palin, who was a first-term governor of Alaska when Arizona Senator McCain picked her as his running mate four years ago.

"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She was an attractive candidate," Cheney said.

"But based on her background - she had only been governor for what, two years? I don't think she passed that test ... of being ready to take over. And I think that was a - a mistake," Cheney added.

McCain and Palin lost to the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and running mate Joe Biden.

Cheney cited his experience in leading the search for running mates for two Republican presidential candidates - incumbent President Gerald Ford in 1976 and George W. Bush in 2000. The latter ended with Cheney himself being chosen as Bush's running mate, and he served as vice president from 2001 to 2009.

Before being elected vice president, Cheney had served as U.S. defense secretary, a White House official, a congressman and a business executive.

Cheney, 71, underwent heart transplant surgery in March in Virginia. Cheney, who has suffered five heart attacks, had been on the cardiac transplant list for more than 20 months before he received the heart from an anonymous donor.

On July 12, Cheney hosted a fundraising event to add to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's brimming campaign coffers.

Palin, the first woman ever to be chosen as the Republican vice presidential candidate, was an unconventional selection in that she was a novice on the U.S. national political scene with relatively little experience in public office.

Palin's selection initially energized McCain's campaign, but she committed a series of gaffes and there was tension between her camp and McCain's advisers behind the scenes.

Palin announced last October she would not seek the Republican U.S. presidential nomination in 2012. Palin cited family considerations as playing a major factor in her decision. She has felt the U.S. news media has gone too far in covering her family, such as the drama involving her daughter Bristol's tempestuous relationship with the father of her child, Levi Johnston.

She made clear she would turn her attention toward recreating a role she carved out for herself in the 2010 congressional elections, helping elect conservatives in tune with the conservative Tea Party movement to Congress, state governorships and the White House.

Palin and McCain endorsed rival candidates in the Indiana Republican Senate primary this year.

Black couple says racism forced wedding relocation

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) ? A Mississippi couple says the church where they planned to get married turned them away because they are black.

Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson say they had set the date and mailed invitations, but the day before their wedding they say they got bad news from the pastor of predominantly white First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs: Some members of the church complained about the black couple having a wedding there.

The Wilsons, who live in nearby Jackson, said they attend the church regularly although they are not members.

Pastor Stan Weatherford told WLBT TV (http://bit.ly/QSNlf8 ) he was surprised when a small number of church members opposed holding the wedding at the church.

"This had never been done before here, so it was setting a new precedent, and there are those who reacted to that because of that," said Weatherford.

Weatherford performed the July 21 ceremony at another church.

"I didn't want to have a controversy within the church, and I didn't want a controversy to affect the wedding of Charles and Te'Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day," said Weatherford.

WLBT reported that church officials now say they welcome any race. They plan to hold internal meetings on how to move forward.

Church member Casey Kitchens said she and other members of the congregation are outraged by the church's refusal to marry a black couple, a decision she says most of the congregation knew nothing about.

"This is a small, small group of people who made a terrible decision," Kitchens told The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/QSRyQa). "I'm just ashamed right now that my church would do that. I can't fathom why. How unfair. How unjust. It's just wrong."

"I blame the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, I blame those members who knew and call themselves Christians and didn't stand up," said Charles Wilson.

Wilson told the newspaper that he understands Weatherford was caught in a difficult position and he still likes the pastor, but he also thinks the pastor should have stood up to the members who didn't want the couple to marry in the church.

"It's not reflective of the spirit of the Lord and Mississippi Baptists," the Mississippi Baptist Convention executive director, the Rev. Jim Futral, said. "It's just a step backward. ... It's a sad thing."

Elephants slaughtered, orphan found in Chad

The government of Chad said it was searching for poachers who slaughtered part of an elephant herd, while a conservation group said it had found an orphaned infant near the slaughter site.

SOS Elephants, which is based in the Central African nation of Chad, said it had counted more than 30 carcasses in the slaughter on Tuesday.

Poachers?on horseback fired on the herd, which was across the river from an educational site run by the nonprofit.

The group?said on its Facebook page that since the slaughter happened deep inside Chad it was probably the work of a local poaching gang, not armed groups from neighboring countries.?

Photos posted on the page showed elephants with their trunks cut off, indicating the poachers were after the tusks. The illegal ivory trade is booming across Africa due to demand from Asia for ivory trinkets.

SOS Elephants founder Stephanie Vergniault?noted that the slaughter was near an oil refinery run by a Chinese company, CNPC. In the past, she posted, "several of their employees" have been caught at the Chad airport "with ivory in their luggage."

Vergniault on Saturday told NBC News she had contacted the security chief at the airport and he promised to get "his people to double check all luggage, mainly the luggage belonging to the Chinese."

On the Facebook page, Vergniault added it was "very likely" the orphaned infant's mother was among the elephants killed. "Very sad, very hard moments," she wrote.

Vergniault urged Chad to create a special law enforcement unit to protect its elephants, and stiffen prison time for poaching. "The poachers need to go 20 years to jail, not 2 years!" she posted.

A wildlife activist who has followed the work of SOS Elephants said getting milk supplies for the orphaned elephant will be critical.?

This orphaned elephant, nicknamed Savi, did not survive after her mother was slaughtered in an earlier poaching incident. SOS Elephants founder Stephanie Vergniault is with her.

"It's difficult to raise elephants, and one problem is getting the right milk formula -- which is very expensive and is shipped from Europe," Laurel Neme told NBC News.

Nicknamed Toto, the 3-week-old male will possibly be shipped to a large elephant shelter in Kenya, said Neme, who tracks wildlife issues on her website.?

"Hopefully what will happen," said Neme, who noted Toto stands a better chance than another recent orphan, nicknamed Savi, that died.

Chad's elephant population is estimated at around 3,000 ? a sharp drop since the 1980s, when it had around 20,000, according to SOS Elephants.

"Tomorrow will be simply too late," Prince William warns as Africa's magnificent wild animals are mercilessly and illegally poached at a rate not seen for decades.

The slaughter?occurred?as nations that are part of a wildlife treaty met to work out issues such as the illegal ivory trade.

As those talks wrapped up Friday, a motion by some African nations to allow the legal sale of ivory from elephants not killed by poachers was tabled for a later meeting.

Conservation groups urged?signatories?of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species?(CITES) to oppose the move, and to get tougher on the illegal wildlife trade.

TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring network funded by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said elephant and rhino poaching are at record levels and that countries where poaching is rampant should be barred from the international trade in wildlife.

"We should not be shy about using CITES trade suspensions as an international tool to prevent a full-blown elephant crisis," said TRAFFIC's Tom Milliken said in a statement issued by the WWF on Friday.

Just days after Rock Center aired Harry Smith's report, "The Last Stand," on the growing epidemic of illegal rhino poaching in South Africa, three of the rhinos featured in the report were attacked by poachers. Rock Center's Harry Smith reports.

On Monday, WWF said in a report that "the illegal killing of elephants in Africa is at the highest levels ever recorded, and the epicenter for poaching is Central Africa where elephant populations are experiencing localized extinctions."

Central African governments this week announced a plan to protect their wildlife, but its effectiveness is a question mark.

"It is critical that the plan is rapidly implemented because time is running out for the elephants of this region," Colman O Criodain, WWF?s wildlife trade specialist, said in the statement.?

Man stops alleged iPhone thief, makes a video

Brian Hester was taking a smoke break on Barclay Street when he witnessed a man steal an iPhone straight out of a woman's hands Thursday.

Hester, a real estate broker and avid photographer, wasn't going to just stand by and do nothing, so he gave chase.

"All I was thinking was, 'Catch this guy,'" Hester said Friday.

Joined by other New Yorkers, Hester and the band of strangers caught up to the alleged thief on Broadway. They held him on the ground and Hester began taking video with his camera.

As they waited for police, the alleged thief decided to make a run for it, but Hester wasn't about to let him get away. He chased the man a second time and tackled the alleged crook right in the middle of Broadway.

Police came and arrested the man and the band of good Samaritans returned the iPhone to its owner.

Throughout the ordeal Hester continued to shoot video with his camera. He hopes that the video he took will serve as a warning to potential thiefs.

"I wanted to put the video out there to show anybody else who's thinking of coming to New York and snatching somebody's iPhone that you're not going to get away with that," said Hester.

African heads to again seek U.N. Mali mandate: Ouattara

PARIS (Reuters) - West African leaders are poised to submit a new request for military invention in Mali to the U.N. Security Council, and boots could be on the ground within weeks, Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara told French weekly Journal du Dimanche.

"A new request to the U.N. Security Council will be shortly submitted in the name of the Economic Community of West African States that I preside over," Ouattara said in the interview to be published in Sunday's edition.

"If the situation does not change for the better, yes, there will be military intervention in Mali," he said, adding that it could happen within "weeks and not months".

Al-Qaeda-linked rebel forces have taken over the northern zones of the West African nation once seen as a model of democracy in the otherwise turbulent region.

The country is still reeling from a March coup in the capital that has rocked its institutions. Its interim president returned on Friday after weeks convalescing abroad following an attack by a mob.

The envisioned African force would be made up of soldiers from Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and possibly Chad and other countries, Ouattara said.

The West African bloc (ECOWAS) is looking to France and the United States to provide logistical support, he said, citing equipment as well as advisors.

"The fact that France assumes in August the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council is very good news because we are totally in sync with the French authorities," he added.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius - who has similarly cited the probable use of military force in Mali - is in Africa this weekend to discuss solutions to the crisis.

President Francois Hollande has said it is up to Africans to decide how to restore stability to the region, but that France would support those efforts to intervene.

Earlier this month, the U.N. Security Council endorsed political efforts by West African leaders to end the unrest in Mali, but stopped short of backing force.

It said it was ready to examine the ECOWAS request once additional detail was provided on the proposed intervention.

According to ECOWAS planners, African forces would first restore stability in the capital of Bamako. After that, regional militaries will help revamp Mali's defeated military and look at helping it retake the north, however details remain sketchy.

Ninety percent of Earth's ozone is in the stratosphere (the second layer of the atmosphere, just above the one we breathe, the troposphere). This ozone forms the ozone layer, which protects everything on the Earth's surface from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

Ozone destruction in the lower stratosphere is caused by reactive chlorine and bromine molecules called free radicals. The free radicals steal one of ozone's three oxygen atoms. Losing an atom transforms ozone into an everyday oxygen molecule that doesn't confer the same protective benefits.

Usually, the chemical reactions that zap ozone happen only at extremely cold temperatures ? about minus 112 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 80 degrees Celsius) ? such as high in the atmosphere above the frozen poles. But Jim Anderson, lead author of the new study, suspected increasing the concentration of water vapor in the stratosphere through storm clouds meant the chemical reactions would spark at higher temperatures seen above the mid-latitudes of the United States.

"Anytime you satisfy the proper concentration of water and temperature, these reactions will take place," said Anderson, an atmospheric chemistry professor at Harvard University.

Water injections

Towering cumulonimbus clouds, the culprit behind severe storms, carry water vapor high into the sky via convection. During monitoring flights conducted between 2001 and 2007, scientists found the cloud tops reached into the lower stratosphere, at altitudes between 9 and 12 miles (15 and 20 kilometers) above us, sending the water they contained aloft. "These convective storms inject water far more deeply into the stratosphere than anybody ever suspected, and that immediately began to concern us," Anderson told OurAmazingPlanet.

Anderson's key concern is chlorine free radicals. The atoms assume their dangerous nature during a rapid series of chemical reactions that take place on the surface of sulfate-water aerosols, tiny droplets that are ubiquitous in the lower stratosphere.

"The chemistry of these sulfate-water aerosols is such that conversion rate from inorganic chlorine is a function not just of temperature, but of water vapor and temperature," Anderson said. Adding more water vapor to the lower stratosphere means chlorine free radicals can form at higher temperatures, he explained. The abundant sunlight available at lower latitudes also boosts the reaction speed.

The study shows chlorine molecules build up rapidly, within the first 24 hours after a storm. As a result, ozone loss can increase by two orders of magnitude compared to that in the regularly arid stratosphere.

[Abstract]

Objective:To explore the method for constructing the model of vascular network of uterus with cervical cancer and discuss its clinical significance.Methods:A set of specimens,including uterus,vagina and uterine adnexa from a cervical cancer patient were infused with 15% perchloroethylene through the uterine artery and the ovarian artery,and then casted.The CT data of the specimen obtained before and after infusion were used to reconstruct 3D uterine arterial network,using the maximum intensity projection(MIP) and volume rendering(VR).Results:(1) The cast specimen and 3D model of uterine arterial vascular network can clearly display the major blood supply of diseased region.(2) The imaging features and anatomical structures of the uterine vascular network could be shown through different points of view on the reconstructed model.Conclusions:It is an effective way to construct vascular network of uterus through vascular cast combined with CT scan.Basing on the uterine arterial vascular network of cervical cancer patient,we can understand the size of the lesion and its blood supply,which is useful for the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer.

Ousted leader's spouse returns to Madagascar

The wife of Madagascar's ousted leader Marc Ravalomanana returned home Friday, after she and her husband were twice denied entry, the leader of his political movement told AFP.

"Ms Lalao Ravalomanana has indeed arrived on Madagascar soil," said Mamy Rakotoarivelo.

She was stopped by airport authorities in the capital Antananarivo, he said, adding that they called Prime Minister Omer Beriziky who granted permission for her to enter the country.

Her arrival came after the first direct talks this week between her husband and Andry Rajoelina, who toppled Ravalomanana three years ago amid weeks of street protests.

The talks failed to agree on conditions for Ravalomanana's eventual return, but his wife's arrival was a sign of progress in easing the deadlock.

Agreeing on the terms of his return is one of the major hurdles in guiding Madagascar towards elections.

The two rivals are expected to meet again within three weeks, before the next summit of the Southern African Development Community, which is mediating in the crisis.

Many high school teachers ? myself included ? bristle at the idea of allowing smartphones such as Androids or iPhones in the classroom. After all, they've learned through experience that teens have a tendency to text friends rather than listen to what is, no doubt, a scintillating lecture. And at their worst, these so-called smartphones can facilitate something not very smart at all ? cheating .

Some high school students, however, are putting their smartphones to clever use, enhancing the classroom experience and propelling education into the 21st century.

1. Say "cheese," whiteboard!
During a 10th-grade English class, Windward School student Lauren Yu whipped out her BlackBerry and aimed it at the note-filled whiteboard. The period was about to end, and she had yet to copy down everything written on the board. So she pulled out her phone and used it to snap an image ? one that could later be hand copied, emailed, or sent to a printer.

"It's good because you can listen to the teacher, and you won't miss your notes," said Yu, who attends school at Windward in Los Angeles, where I teach journalism. And it's not just students who are taking advantage of new technology. Teachers are getting in on the act as well.

"Sometimes I'll snap (a photo of the whiteboard) on my phone and upload it to our class web page so students can download it later if they desire," said Kevin Flinn, a high school English teacher at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C., in an email.

"It's good for visual learners to have the photo to which they can return if they need reinforcement," he added. "It's also beneficial if one of their classmates is absent."

You can also use apps such as Evernote (download Evernote for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad or Android) that automatically saves your snapshot ? along with a short blurb you type in ? on the cloud. With Evernote, you can easily access your snapshots on your computer or other mobile devices.

2. A slicker clicker
With technology such as ResponseWare (download ResponseWare for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad or Android), students can use smartphones as classroom "clickers" to participate in response-based activities.

Teachers can ask students multiple-choice questions, and students can then respond by "clicking" an image on their phones, with answers appearing on screen in real time.

3. Record lectures
While Yu mentioned that some students record lectures on their computers, others are using their smartphones for exactly the same purpose. With built-in programs such Voice Memo on iPhones and third-party hands-free note-taking apps, students can turn the mic on the teacher while also writing down their own notes.

4. Apps and QR codes
Whether it's a digital metronome for music students or an interactive periodic table for chemistry enthusiasts, yes, there's probably an app for that. And many apps are both cost-effective and add no extra weight to an already bulging backpack.

QR codes can lead students to websites with just one click. Colette Cassinelli, a high school teacher in Oregon, suggested on U.K.-based education technology blog EdTe.ch that students and teachers use these codes to promote school events, such as Teen Read Week. Mark Rollins, a lecturer in Wigan, England, also used EdTe.ch to suggest adding QR codes to Microsoft Word documents, allowing students to check answers on assignments.

5. Email
In a time when preschoolers are mastering programs on their parents' iPads, using email in the classroom might be considered quaint. But don't discount its usefulness when it comes to instant access on smartphones.

"I think the biggest benefit is students (and teachers) having instant access to email," said North Carolina-based English teacher Flinn via, natch, email. "They don't need to have Web access (or even a computer) at home any more, and those kids who are shuttling back and forth between parents' houses can still check their school email regularly, if not constantly."

Samsung kills local search on international Galaxy S3 in 'stability' update

There's a new over-the-air update rolling out for the international Samsung Galaxy S III (aka Galaxy S3 GT-i9300) this evening. The OTA message identifies it as a "stability update," but what it also does is remove local (on-device) search functionality in the phone's built-in Google Search app. The new version -- XXBLG6 -- is a relatively recent build, having been cooked just a few days ago on Jul. 20. A new baseband version, XXLG6, is also included, but we haven't noticed any other changes thus far.

Following legal action by Apple, which temporarily resulted in the Galaxy Nexus being banned in the U.S., Samsung has taken to pre-emptively disabling the ability to search within on-device data (like contacts and applications) on some U.S. Galaxy S3's. However, the decision to kill local search on the unlocked international model (which isn't sold in the U.S.) is a little perplexing, not least because Apple has yet to challenge Sammy over local search in the EU or UK, where the GT-i9300 is sold.

What's more, marking this solely as a "stability" update seems a little underhanded, as users aren't being informed that the latest OTA disables functionality which was included with their original purchase. Nevertheless, local search is now gone on the international Galaxy S3, a decision which makes Samsung's leading smartphone a little less smart. We're sure folks are working on hacking local search back in as we speak, just as we're sure Apple will pursue some other tactic in its efforts to block the S3 from sale.

If you're down with preemptively crippled search functionality, you can grab the 27MB OTA package through Samsung's software updates menu on the phone, or through the Kies desktop app.

Fred Willard is speaking out about his July 19 arrest for allegedly engaging in a lewd act in an adult theater, tweeting that the movie was "lousy" and he's got his own version of events coming up.?

"Wait til u hear my version; much more PG. & my review, lousy film, but theater would make a terrific racquetball court. Full story 2 follow," he wrote on Twitter Monday.

This is the first we've heard from Willard since the arrest, which took place at L.A.'s Tiki Theater on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. Even though Willard has kept quiet up until this point, his attorney previously made a statement saying that the case is all just a big misunderstanding.

That attorney, Paul Takakjian,?told TMZ,?"With all due respect to the individual officer, our belief is that Fred did nothing in any violation of any law. We will be working vigorously to clear his name in this matter."

Because of the arrest, Willard was fired from his PBS show "Market Warriors," a spin-off of "Antiques Road Show."? PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger explained the decision at the Television Critics Association's summer season press tour saying, ?It?s a new series, and our concern really is that [Willard's] circumstance would become a distraction to the series, which we?re hoping will have an ongoing presence on public television.?

In a tweet that followed his promise to offer up a "full story," Willard reminded his fans he can still be found on television, just on the?ABC show "Trust Us With Your Life."

I managed to irritate one or two people here?yesterday; not for the first and almost certainly not for the last time. I wonder if those commenting really thought that I was advocating the securing to stakes and pelting with filth of those who failed effectively to motivate their children in the study of mathematics? ?If so, it is time now to reveal that this was meant humorously!

In the coming week I want to look at home education in the secondary years, with particular reference to subjects which parents themselves found hard or disliked at school. All too often, we as parents transmit these prejudices and neuroses to our children, so that you will have families with a tradition of art and music, while others tend towards science. This certainly happens in schooling families and I strongly suspect that it is even more common in home educating families.

Today though, I want briefly to mention one or two personal things about my own daughter?s education and the peculiar?man who supervised it. By the age of sixteen she had passed eight International GCSEs, all at A*. These were English language, English literature, mathematics, history, physics, biology, chemistry and religious studies. She had also gained Grade 6 (bronze medal) at acting with LAMDA, as well as ?Grade 5 classical guitar and Grade 2 piano with the ABRSM. She had no lessons or tutoring in any of those subjects, except by me.

Now I wonder if readers think that all this was because I am some sort of Renaissance Man or Victorian polymath? Do they perhaps think that I am a musician in the morning, who acts at weekends and has a passionate interest in science and mathematics? Not a bit of it. I literally cannot play a single note on the guitar, nor have I ever acted, even at school. As for mathematics, I know hardly anything about the subject and was a complete failure at school. It was my worst subject. Readers are now perhaps scratching their heads, saying to themselves, ?Hang on a minute, wasn?t he talking about the joys of higher mathematics yesterday and rabbiting on about calculus? Somethings?s not right here!?

I shall be expanding upon this idea in the next week or so, but for now I will say that all I know about calculus is that it is concerned with changing motion and figuring out the area under curves. That is it; the sum total of my knowledge. My daughter needed calculus for her maths IGCSE and did it so well that she went on to get an A* in the subject at A level. How can this be, if I was such a duffer at maths and disliked the subject? What about physics? Surely I must be a specialist at that? Nothing of the sort.

This is only a short post, but I want to leave you with this thought. If I did not think that I could have provided my daughter with an education at least as rich and varied, as well as academically sound, as that which she would have received at the best of schools; I should never have embarked upon the enterprise in the first place. True, I had other motives, but this would have been an irreducible minimum, whatever other reasons I might have had for wanting to home educate.

Educating children at home has nothing to do with knowing about subjects. Nor does it, or perhaps I should say that it should not, have any connection with which things one enjoyed at school or found difficult there. Anybody can teach their child literally anything at all; from calculus to piano, from acting to chemistry. It requires no ?prior knowledge and will not produce misery in any child. Before I finish, I must leave readers with a simple question. I have a reputation as being a highly structured, school-at-home type of home educator; one who taught, rather than allowed his child to learn naturally. Here is the question. Does anybody believe for a moment that it would be possible to get a child to work hard enough at the guitar to pass grade 5, unless the child was a willing partner in the process? Can anybody imagine forcing, against her wishes, a child of twelve to study calculus? Or biology, acting or anything else? If they can visualise such a neurotic and driven child, forced on by an unforgiving and fanatically pushy parent to over-achieve in all areas, simply to obey his wishes; well then, all I can say is that such people must have a vastly more vivid imagination that my own! It is quite literally impossible to get a two year-old to eat a carrot. How less likely is it that one would be able to persuade, against her will, an adolescent to study mathematics. As I say, I shall be looking at secondary education in the next few weeks and exploring this whole idea in more detail.
