Various types of parasites can infest a dog. Common parasites that pester dogs are flea, ticks mites and LICE! The painstaking efforts of a dog owner to maintain the health and the cleanliness of the pet cannot prevent lice infestation as these parasites actually thrives on the body of clean dogs.
Lice are parasites that can infest both humans and dogs. The lice that afflicts humans though is different from the lice that thrives on the dog?s body thus the infestation of the pet cannot be blamed on the lice the commonly infests the toddler as human lice cannot live on dogs and vice versa.
The kind that infest dogs are wingless parasites that can be tan, beige or gray in color and has the size of about 1/12 of an inch. Removing lice by hand from the dog?s body would not be very hard as lice are almost stationary. The dog can be infested with two types of lice ? the sucking and the biting kind. The dog can have the kind of lice that bites to feed on skin flakes or the lice can be the kind that thrive on the dog?s body by sucking blood. Both kinds of lice infestation has to be resolved as the biting kind will be an annoyance because the itching will make the dog scratch incessantly while the blood sucking kind can cause anemia especially if the infestation is severe.
A lice infested dog can transmit the parasite to another dog through direct contact. An infestation can develop if the grooming tools of an infested pet is used on another dog. Lice population can grow rapidly as a female lice can lay up to 100 eggs thus if prompt administration of eradication measures are not administered, the dog would be greatly affected by its freeloaders.
Excessive scratching is one of the signs of lice infestation. Lice can be seen attached to the skin of the dog especially on the neck and shoulders, on the anus and on the ears. The nits or the eggs of lice can be easily noticed but they are hard to remove as they are attached to hair follicles by a glue-like substance.
Lice infestation is easy to resolve with insecticides. Adult lice are eliminated by bathing the dog with insecticide shampoo. The treatment must be repeated several times as the insecticides would have no effect on the eggs. To totally eradicate the infestation, the beddings and the toys of the dog must be washed thoroughly to make sure that the parasites are killed.
